Panda URL filtering of malware

Hello,

I know I posted something in here before about Panda URL filter not working but I got past that little problem. Now my question is, does anyone have any clue if it activly scans HTTP traffic for malware like Avast! web shield? or like Bitdefender Trafficlight OS addon? or does it only block malicious domains like Avast! Network shield?

Panda URL filter works like avast!'s Network Shield, blocking malicious URL's and domains.

 

Can you get panda url filter on its own?

 

You can get it stand alone, no problem.

But the problem is, it doesn't work all that well because it fails to trigger at times, or some browsers don't recognize it. If someone has a workaround for that issue, I'd love to hear it.

 

I will say I have also noticed a few quirks lately thats causing it not to trigger. Im asking the devs to see the status of a fix hopefully a fix will be soon.

 

Thank you! the biggest problem ive noticed really is that it wont start protecting for about 10-20 min after the computer starts. Its not really game breaking but it is quite annoying

Download the toolbar (link at the bottom).

Open the PandaSecurityToolbar.exe with 7zip or WinRAR so you see its content.
Open folder $PLUGINSDIR and extract the file PandaURLFiltering_setup.exe.

Run PandaURLFiltering_setup.exe as usual to install just the URL scanner. Seems like a complicated job but it's realyl easy to do and can be done in few seconds. And without any idiotic toolbars that really drive me crazy.

Funny, I was about to post here current thoughts on Panda AV and what are the best settings. Trying to find a "light" av for the kids laptop. So far, everything is to heavy. Was going to use WSA but mh subscription is running out soon, and I do not plan on renewing it.

 

I was talking about the URL filter......... Have you thought about Bitdefender Free for the kids?

 

I have. Ran it for a bit, did not play so well. However that was early on. You think its worth a shot? Feel free to PM so we don't go OT or it turns into A vs. B.

PandaCloudFree is perfect for the kids. It is my 'go-to' product for most clients, or PC's I work on where the budget is low. It gets installed by default on most of them, and in cases where they can afford it I snag pro licenses off Ebay and resell them at a markup. Absolutely no issue with this product, and I have installed it on a good number of machines.

But PandaURLFilter is pretty flaky, and I do not feel it is stable or accurate enough to use anymore. Too bad, it has huge potential.

 

I don't see what you guys mean by "Flaky" I'm by no means defending it because the late start-up is a issue. But after it does start up and in testing its blocking rate is superb. Just in my experience though.

 

i wouldn't say that. PCAV can be turned off very easy, and it stays this way until the user starts it again. not good, as it has no password protection on the settings or on the turn on/off option. for kids who click on everything out of curiosity, PCAV is not the best solution.

You don't hide the tray icons for security products on kids PCs, and remove icons on the desktop? I sure as hell do. They never know it is running - until a threat hits - and that's how it should be.

Can't turn it off if they can't find it.

 

Tried it out today in a vm at work. Bottom line, did not care for it. Threw some malware links at it, of the ones I tested, it did not get any of em.

Im on the hunt still.

 

So is the Panda URL filter worth it or not? what is the verdict here?

 

Imho from testing today, not worth it at the moment anyway. Others may disagree.

any alternatives? I am looking for a stand alone URL filter. don't need entire antivirus.

 

K9 Web Protection.

True, but based on my experience with both products I can say that:

K9 offers better protection (detection of malicious pages)
K9 is more granular (more settings)
K9 is lighter (less consumption of system resources)

 

If you feel that way, you can opt to use PAV Pro which has anti-phishing integrated in the product.

Panda has gotten a little quiet recently but we'll update everyone when we receive further information on the URL Filter's quirks.
