Rollback Rx v10 pre release

Wanted to give a heads up rollback version 10 pre release just released not even 24 hours ago

Looking very good so far. I understand some of you do like it because it makes it hard to image but for everyone else give it a try if you'd like. Very stable on my windows 8 pro system. The time it saves is well worth the 1 time every couple years I'd need to restore a disk image.

 

Please give us a follow-up of your experience now that is is more than 24 hours after your install of rollback.

 

So first let me that I have been using rollback rx since 2005. This includes beta releases to final releases. Also now the final version has been released and is available for download http://www.horizondatasys.com/products_and_solutions.aspx?ProductId=1

So like previous versions it creates snapshots of your system at certain points in time (user can manually start them or can be scheduled times or even setup to start when certain apps run) and restore them at a later time. This is great for testing software, hiding Internet or other computer activity, restoring user related screwups and even from most virus activity.

So version 10 is off to a great start. Since pre release it has been storing snapshots and restoring them perfectly.

HDS has been very receptive to user input and criticism. They seem to be doing this with tremendous speed.

One more thing that many of you will want to hear myself included is the new version of drive cloner that should be released in the next month will be able to back up drives with rollback installed including rollback snapshots!! This is a long awaited feature. I can't wait!

Since rollback has been out for so long I'm not going to go in depth but I can say I'm pleased with version 10 so far and I expect I will continue to be.

If anyone has questions ill try to answer and if I can't answer it I should be able to get an answer for you.

We'll still have to uninstall/re-install when we defrag, so imaging over the installed snapshots is only a benefit when you're not defragging.

 

The title of this thread is misleading now that RBrx10 has been released. Perhaps we should close the thread.

 

Would you be able to provide me with some info on how much time/speed you are saving by defragging using a third party program? What are you basing it on apps opening, boot up, shutdown? I ask only because I have used Rollback for years and never really experienced slow down that would make me think I need to defrag using a third party defrag program. TBH I haven't had to use a defragger when I haven't used Rollback. I do usually reinstall the OS every yr or so. Maybe that's why? Any info would be appreciated. Also since you suggested this thread be closed can you PM me in the case it is.

Hi Chris, I don't equate defragging my hard drive with saving time. Eventually every body's HDD gets fragmented to some extent causing the HD to hunt for info. Defragging with a defragger, whether it's the Windows defragger or a third party one does the job. I defrag when my HD gets to about 6% fragmented. The RBrx Defragger isn't the same thing. It only defrags the snapshots one at a time. Look at the progress bars next time RB defrags. The next time you uninstall RB, analyze your HD with a third party defragger and note how fragmented it is. If you have never done a third party defrag since you got RB in 2005, you may be surprised as to the extent your HD is fragmented.

While RBX 10 has been release, it is important to note that there are severe limitations that aren't well publicized. RBX v10 is currently not for everyone.

 

HI Chris, I find that my PC becomes rather sluggish after about 4 or 5 weeks of use. I am a heavy PC user (CAD and graphics work) and I attribute the slow down to this. I know others who find no slow down over many months and so they seldom uninstall Rx and do house cleaning and then reinstall. I do not know if the defrag makes a big diff but for sure the PC is much faster after I do my monthly housecleaning. I have no problem with this as its just part of my being able to use Rx however if I could avoid it I would prefer to do so. On another thread I replied to one of your posts and mentioned a possible alternate to Rx. I did not mention that this program will be able to store its snaps to a drive other than the main drive. It will not mess with the MBR and it will also be able to do disk images as well. I do not expect it will be perfect and that it will work without issue for every user but it sure does sound interesting. In addition, I think it would be able to be used with Rx installed (but I could be wrong about this) and if this is the case even more protection would be available. The indicated price is quite reasonable as well. I am providing a link to the thread regarding this program here even though I posted it as well on the other thread in case you miss it.
