some people have this mindset that things ALWAYS have to be continually
updated and in most cases this is true but the way Look'nStop works
If you can write rules yourself or have someone do it for you this program
has little need to be updated

i've been trying Comodo for the last couple of days.
as well as TinyWall, ZoneAlarm, OA, and Private Firewall (that one froze and locked my machine).

the one i liked the best after LnS was Comodo, but 135 megabytes is a little hard to swallow compared to the 1 megabyte of LnS.

    Salut,

For people who are testing many firewalls or antivirus, it is important to know that a simple uninstall is not enough, go into the registry and clean all the keys, even the legacy..., especially with Zonealarm.

If not even a healthy firewall as Privatefirewall may conflict to the level of the drivers.

    Hi,
Why do many people always asking about "updates" even if the software does not need. "LnS" done its job perfectly.
For over thirty years, I use very often, such as signature, a quote from Henry de Montherlant (In French first because I'm afraid that my bad English translation reflects the meaning of the quote):
« Aujourd'hui, l'idéal du progrès est remplacé par l'idéal de l'innovation : il ne s'agit pas que ce soit mieux, il s'agit seulement que ce soit nouveau, même si c'est pire qu'avant et cela de toute évidence.»

« Today, the ideal of progress is replaced by the ideal of innovation: it's not that it's better, it's just that it is new, even if it is worse than before and this obviously. »

This is very nice to hear and at the same time something is weird to me. Frederic has been around on the Forum until what? two years ago? If it's true that if something was worth patching he would do it, why then he wouldn't be able to come here and just say a word to his faithful customer. o_O

yeah, it's pretty light, even with D+ turned on.

but since i only want the firewall 135 megs of disk space is bloat, afaic.

i think Comodo should make their products 'modular', so you can download and install only the part of the suite one is interested in.

I agree with you to a certain extent. I do make a distinction though between the state of the art in technology and the state of the art in design. With computer technology design is not such an important issue as much as the frenetic speed of change in computer hardware and software. One of my notebooks is from 2005, it still works well but it certainly can't compare with the latest i7 processors and related hardware. In this field "Aujourd'hui c'est mieux que hier".

What are you guys waffling on about? If LooknStop needs updating it should be in order of priority. And nothing is more urgent that a complete GUI revamp. :D

I use comodo firewall and it doesnt need updating etc.I just set the rules and comodo does the rest.
Does the windows built in firewall need updating also?of course not.we are given the tools and its up to us how we use them.

Also there seems to be some reliance on the shields up test.even if not all ports are stealthed its not a big issue at all.As long as they are closed.
The kaspersky firewall does not stealth ports by default as it was designed this way. There is too much emphasis on stealthing ports.
    Just my opinion anyway.
    Best wishes.:thumb:

Nevermind... Nevermind... I take it all back. I was horribly wrong! And I see the error of my way now.

I'll probably be using Comodo FW/D+ v. 5.10 for the rest of XP's life after seeing how bloated v.6 is, unless I see a "slim" build pop up or something. At least I didn't pay for mine though.

For that matter I may just go on using XP Pro forever, long after it's EOL, after seeing how bloated Vista and 7 are. I just fixed a friends computer running 7, and even after a clean install of the OS (format), with 4 GB of RAM it was slow. Much slower than I'm accustomed to on my XP box. The layout isn't intuitive at all. I ran a virus scan afterward and it took like 6 hours to comb through all that bloat. Takes me 20 minutes with the same AV on my XP box.

Legacy OS/apps FOREVER!... if this is what they call progress, they can keep it.

Couldn't agree more about the bloat of Win 7 and 8
will not EVER see my machine unless it is a striped down version
when Win XP can not function anymore it will be Linux

Agreed. Based on what I see in 7/8, if they don't seriously clean up their act and go in a new direction I'll be a Linux user when I'm done with XP.

Also I shouldn't have added the comment: "at least I didn't pay for it" in there. To find an app perfectly suited to your needs, that plays well on your setup and is light as a feather... that's worth it's weight in gold. If they offered a "slim" version of Comodo with just the FW/D+... no sandbox/kiosk, and no cloud scanning features, I'd pay for it in a heartbeat. And I know I'm not alone. A FW only version would be great too.

LnS developer MIA, hunted down and brought to justice by a search party.

    ===

The only thing to really worry about is that LnS remains compatible with future Windows versions and future Windows updates.

With LnS YOU define the rules. It's a bit like Linux iptables, but more user friendly.
LnS never caused me security related trouble.
One time I had trouble, it was something installed by a "friend" while I was on a holiday and he was allowed to use my PC. LnS's log was filling up and I could block it easily. The thread should still be here somewhere.
The other time was when Microsoft decide to change the local port ranges in Windows Vista, and my Windows XP rule set failed to do it's job when imported. Both issues were not caused by LnS.

That's not too bad for almost 7 years.
And add to that : 3 licenses, never had to pay for an upgrade.

Well, virtually it looks like Frederic has passed away.
But actually his little company needs to pay the running costs like web server fees or bank account fees etc...

What concerns me most is that on the LnS webpage there is no statement of support for Windows 8. Sooner or later we will run into a compatibility issue. This happened with all new versions of Windows & LnS so far!

And then we'll need him back ASAP (like a Hobbit, who needs help/support of Gandalf :D )

Yes the support indeed seems to be active, here is a reply I got to querry if A new Windows 8 Version is planned.

    "Hello,
    Thanks for contacting us.
Unfortunately, Windows 8 will not be supported by Look 'n' Stop. Some users reported the current version works anyway with Windows 8, but probably it is not fully compatible.

    Regards,
    The Look 'n' Stop Team."

Unfortunately for me I got a BSOD as soon as I connected it to the internet on a clean Windows 8 Pro x64 Install. So I guess this should settle matters regarding L'n'S atleast for the foreseeable future.

It appears the support doesn't have contact with the developer either. Sad state of affairs, but I do think it is time to move on. I'm not sure why the company still functions in this state.
