Facebook is the ultimate rapist of privacy. The ultimate tool of capitalist scum.

You sign up - your choice.
You volunteer information - your choice.
You setup your privacy settings - your choice.

Agree agree agree. This is what they call freedom of choice, freedom of assembly etc etc etc. Reveal yourself negatively using social media and you are responsible and accountable for its content. Remember that an eagle that hangs around with turkeys will never learn to soar. Choose your friends wisely.

The most successful and desirable companies to work for have a good balance of professional and social behavior cemented deep in their corporate culture. How you perform your responsibilities at work is based on your work experience, knowledge of the job and your social interactions with others. A social misfit can be toxic. If you are prone to outrage or trivial accusations on a social networking site you are probably going to exhibit behavioral outbursts in the work place. HR is not blacklisting the guy with a lamp shade on his head, they are looking at the history (positive and negative) of how one interacts socially.

You as the end user have a choice what you put out there and how you can control your online fingerprint to an extent. I personally do not have an online fingerprint minus my linkedin. From a business perspective, it does make sense to monitor social media.

If you are putting yourself out there then they should be able to see how you will present yourself. It is a different matter if they start demanding access to things you have set to private. However OSINT is fair game in my opinion.

The solution is easy. Only use facebook and other social media tools for uncontroversial topics i.e. discussing where you should meet up with peers for a study group or where you can hang out with friends.. Don't ever use facebook for controversial topics i.e. joining an Occupy Wallstreet group or anti abortion group. Don't post pics of smoking weed, drunk and etc. Bad for reputation if employers see it.

well u got to wonder if zuckerburg, sergey brin, larry page, bill gates - believe they all support the "D" (socialist) party so what does this has to do with capitalism?

yeah the solution is easy. don't join facebook, don't join twitter, don't use google, dont use gmail, dont use google docs or any other of their "free" spyware apps. burn me once(GMAIL), shame on you, burn me twice.....
