The PC is not dead

 

For every article claiming it is, there's another claiming it isn't. Mobile has finally hit the big time, but mobile isn't and won't be good for everything for a while.

Ya think? But seriously, let's see tablets do Photoshop proper, let's see them pull off Call of Duty and heavier games. It's going to be a while.

I love PCs, but others have got creazy with Tablets and Mobile...

 

A well written article. I really liked this:

I've got 5 laptops ranging in age from 3 to 6 years old, and have no need at all to replace any of them with a new laptop, as even my 6 year old laptops run more than fast enough for what I use them for.

I've got two Android tablets I purchased last year and pretty much never use.

 

Another reason PC sales may be dropping is that many users don't want Win-8.

Could be. It's sad that many people feel the need to buy a new computer every few years because their computer is running really slowly or has other problems. Mostly these probems are only software related and can be fixed, e.g. reinstall Windows and the computer will run just like new again.

 

Wrong. No matter what you want to believe, PC sales didn't start dropping with the release of Windows 8. And Windows 8 is an OS for note/netbooks, ultrabooks, tablets, convertibles and slates as well as PCs.

 

Put it this way... Windows 8 is certainly not helping PC or laptop sales...

 

But W8 is certainly helping the sales of devices that were made with it in mind.

 

That may be true, yes.....

 

Most users don't seem to care one way or the other. They simply accept what the PC comes with and use it.

Thankfully, I don't have to buy a new machine right now, and hopefully not for a few more years. But if I did, I guess I'd have to take what was offered. Meanwhile, no need to upgrade.

I don't think the PC is dead, nor will it be for a long time. It's just being overshadowed by newer technology sales. That doesn't mean it's gone.

 

Yeah, if I had to buy a new Windows machine right now I'd probably have to settle for Win 8. Unless I could find a nice computer that still had Win 7 installed. I may buy a new laptop later in the year. I'll probably get a Macbook if I do.

I'm a bit old school, I really do like a conventional desktop PC. I can get a lot of work done on a conventional set-up. I like the portability of a small laptop for watching streamed TV & things like that though. A cheapish small tablet might be useful, but I am not a huge fan of tablets as a whole. People are buying them, but they are using them in a slightly different way to a more conventional PC, that's all.

 

I could see myself (maybe) getting a tablet, but to me, they are pretty much just over-sized cell phones... I will stick with a desktop or laptop as long as they are available....

 

Actually that's a pretty good description of a tablet. LOL

Don't many tablets have micro hdmi ports and micro usb ports? So you can plug in a large monitor and keyboard whenever you need to. With that in mind, how many people will actually want their next PC to be a tablet instead?

Maybe not in the next 2 years, but the power of tablets will only grow, and so will the versatility. Add NAS storage and you really won't need a desktop PC. Your tablet can double as that and be portable for watching movies on the plane (or bus, or during boring lectures).

The PC may not be dead, but it is going to continue to decline.

BTW I own a laptop and 2 desktops and zero tablets.
