A/ I bet millions more have Java installed than have ever uninstalled it. It's safe to say that it will be a security concern for many more years.

B/ LibreOffice is buggier than a rainforest. I'll certainly never use it again. I'll stick with OO. But we've been through all of this with SirPeterPan Wild Hunter. ;)

After reading this, I wouldn't touch Java atm.

Besides that, the millions of users will probably wait for Microsoft/Mozilla/Google/Apple and other vendors to disable vulnerable versions of Java for them via "automatic updates". And that process takes a while.

Definitely! The members of this forum and others that follow security issues are an extreme minority
in the number of people who have computers.

LOLROTF. This made my day. Just glad I wasn't drinking coffee before reading it.

I use Java. I have not removed it, not going to. I honestly doubt that I will be hit by this exploit anyway. :D

I uninstalled Java - no problems. However, I have a question about Default Browser notifications being gone now - is that due to not having Java? Previously when I used Google Chrome it would notify me if it wasn't currently my default browser - likewise with IE. None of my pc's do that now and I assume it requires Java, but I can't find confirmation of this anywhere on the Internet. Can anyone verify this - just curious. Thanks.

Probably not going to happen any time soon. Exploit kits typically contain numerous packages that target vulnerabilities across several platforms, in order to snare as many victims as possible. I think it's sometimes referred to as "lottery strategy". There's likely no need now or in the foreseeable future to remove the ones that target Java vulnerabilities.

I think the basic idea is simple...

If you need for Java only for your installed programs, then make sure the browser plugin is disabled/removed. If you need Java plugin (not to be confused with javascript) for a site, then make sure you enable it for that site only.

That said, most home users can run fine without it.

Then 2 days later... more will pop up (and I'm probably being kind with that figure).

And btw, I took what Bodhitree said as a joke. But who knows, maybe they were dead serious... Hard to detect sarcasm in print.

Even if Java didnèt have a History of issues security wise I would still remove it if I didnèt need it since that is eating up space and slowing my scans etc.

    Once less target.:D
