Looks ok, as you can see the boot process - if we assume it's 12.04, is already optimized, or rather saturates/peaks even for much older generations of processors and drives, so it's not the matter of any extra hardware that will lend better results. It's up to Ubuntu to optimize its internal flows.

However, it's really expensive. I bought an hp laptop, with 4gb ram, nvidia card 2 years back, with i5 processor, so it would be comparable more or less to this one here plus the time frame change in specs, plus windows, for 1,000 dollars.

I have actually been looking for something cheap with Ubuntu pre-installed so I went ahead and ordered that Vostro 2420 this week. I have high hopes it will get the job done without too much noise or heat.

    Hello, by the way.

Perhaps your people can inquire with my lawyer about that. :)

Hi, abt bootchart i noticed it sometimes stops timing even before cpu quiets down - is that accurate?

for eg, in mrk's article the 2nd chart (kubuntu) the last dotted line on the right is located when the blue graphs quiets down - seems correct. but for the 1st & particularly the 3rd (xubuntu), there's still activity ongoing.

Activity does not necessarily mean the boot process is not over.
Effectively, it's the moment you can begin using the desktop env.

    Ahh ok, thanks Mrk.

I only noticed this "behavior" happening more often recently. Either that or I didn't notice it before when on older distro & kernel 2.x. I guess you're explanation is right, as it ties with bootchart doc - it goes by detection of certain specific processes.

I've played with the XPS 13 in person, but the Windows version. Beautiful laptop. Very sturdy feeling for being so small and thin. The screen I remember being really nice, too. Just needs a retina display.

The palmrest has this soft coating which looks and feels great to use, but will likely show wear spots after a while. It is certainly pricey considering the minimum of ports it gives you. The Samsung ultrabooks are also very Ubuntu friendly, but not OEM.

Thanks for another informative article, good to see a comparison between different desktop environments. I may switch from Ubuntu to Xubuntu on my netbook.

I am considering the same thing ... my UNR 10.04 LTS is about to expire.
