Well ABP isn't needed with any browser if you have Ad Muncher. ;)

With that being said Opera has a major update planned for this year.

12.5 will have many improvements including improved hardware acceleration, standards support as well as work on the extension system.

I guess I've been fortunate that all of the things that I need from Opera, work well.

Quick question, Jeffrey, does AdMuncher take care of all that social nonsense that's so pervasive? You know the stuff, the Like buttons and all that. Also, how easy is it now to handle sites that don't necessarily need all 3rd party networks unblocked to run right, but does require certain ones? Is AdMuncher an all or nothing deal, or can it be tweaked to allow one thing, but not another?

By default all social tracking and web bugs are removed.

some of the actual main iframes are not blocked by default since many users use them.

These can easily be removed if the user wants them removed and I happily help anyone coming to me with questions on how to do that.

v5.x with its new interface will allow me to add filters to remove all of the social crap and the user can just check a box if they want it gone.

I strive not to break any site so as far as I know no site is broken right now and nothing needs to be allowed for sites to work.

With that being said, nothing is perfect and I do get reports of page damage occasionally. I of course then fix it within an update or two.

As for exactly what Ad Muncher can allow or not allow on any given basis would fill up a book. ;p

if you have specific examples in mind I'd be better able to answer them.

Sounds good, I'm willing to pop on a year to see how it goes :) Hmm, examples of sites, well, I do know of some internet radio websites like Jango that in the past wanted some ad service allowed before all functions would work. Outlook.com is a great example of a site that is resistant to ad blocking. You can use the site just fine until you need to attach a file to an email. It won't work at all until I completely disable ABP.

Edit: Jeffrey, is that first link with 50% off still in effect? It seems to be, but this is the 2nd of January for me.

    It is indeed still valid.

As for sites that don't work with ad blockers.

that's one of my specialties. :)

if you find any I really enjoy working on those.

especially those that attempt to detect ad blockers and then admonish the user.

I agree, opera is poor with extensions. However Admuncher pretty much eliminates extension needs for me (DNT, Ghost, ABP, none needed). Opera is elegant, and sexy, and I love the skins and functionality.

The problem is, it's just slower than the rest, benchmarks I run prove this. It's frustrating as I want it to be fast because I like it for many other reasons. One page opera doesn't handle right, and you cannot login under opera is GMG. I use GMG a lot. http://www.greenmangaming.com/ With that being said, I LOVE how I can tweak Opera without having to compile my own version. They really need to fix extension engine, add sandboxing, and speed the thing up (by at least 25% or more in speed) and I would be in browser heaven. Benchmarks don't lie, Opera is pokey.

That being said. EVERY VERSION of Opera that comes out I install it, and run tests. I want to love it, more than you can imagine...

Well, I'm running AdMuncher at the moment and want to see how well Opera does with it. Opera is just one of those ex-girlfriends that you used to love so much, but things happened, you grew apart and, even though you know things changing are not likely, you can't forget her, and sometimes you just have to call her up. I now question whether that is defined as non-violent stalking, lol, but you get my drift.

@Jeffrey: Forgive my noob question, but is there a reason the toolbar doesn't appear for every block? Not that I need it to, I actually prefer it not to show up, but it seemed to just randomly activate. Also, I hope you guys find a better payment processor in the future. Recent history has not given me much faith in the security of PayPal.

@Acr1965: Yep, my year was discounted as well just a bit ago.

Toolbar actives when a popup is blocked, and only when a popup is blocked.

CTRL-Right Click brings it up anyway, such as reporting a problem with a page, which goes directly to Jeff. For example I reported a new type of driveby ad, nobody has seen it before. I certainly have not in hundreds of thousands of websites. NOTHING blocked it, including Admuncher, I submitted it, the problem was isolated, and tonights update fixes it for everyone, even if they are never aware of it, it won't impact them as more sites start using the new thing. Fantastic stuff. Good description of Opera.. It's like that ex-girlfriend that was OK in bed, not phenomenal, just OK. But something about her makes you give her a ring every few months. You take her out for a spin, then go back to your regular girl. Hilarious, but fitting.

Note: Fastest I have gotten Opera is with portable 64-bit edition, operating on RamDisk, heavily tweaked. I must admit, it was pretty speedy, but only 'about as' fast as Chrome-Dev properly tweaked without being on a RamDisk. If they can speed up opera by even 20-25%, it would be totally usable by me.

I've already reported a couple of sites myself. Doubleclick is a pain, though I honestly cannot groan too much over two ads getting through out of the other 377 ads it blocked (yeah, 377 ads, and I've had the program for 2 measly hours, lol). Thanks for the info on the toolbar, I'm still working through all the options and don't even know how to manually block an ad yet :D By the way, if you're going to give a girl a ring every few months, just marry her and get it over with :D

Outlook.com and all its features work fine here, with ABP + Fanboy list for Opera, and Fanboy TPLs for IE.

It may be an issue with some of your lists/filters.

Not to hijack it. But I just checked opera forums, quite a lot of complaints of slowness with 12.12 incarnations. Most people went to 12.50-Next. So I installed 12.50Next and it is exceptionally fast!!! No idea what Opera is doing, but they need to really reconsider 12.12 changes, it's a mess. I think I will switch over to 12.50 and run that until I am 'sure' things improve with the release versions.

Where did you find it? I went to Opera but they're still offering 12.12 snapshots..even though it's released, lol.

Edit: Nevermind, lol. Jeffrey solved that mystery.

Or he simply has the bad habit of jumping to conclusions way faster than what is reasonable.

Or it's the ex-dev in him and he's an obvious tweaker, sometimes those types are hard to please :D If you're going to make accusations of jumping to conclusions too fast, you'd have to indict many more here, based on my time looking through the forums, lol.

That, and I am an engineer, so I micro-analyze everything. The tiniest variances annoy me to no end really. Nevertheless, I do not think I am jumping to conclusions based on what I can dig up with searches. A lot of people seem to be indicating 12.12 was a significant reduction in speed. The reason I tried 12.50 is because several searches indicated this was the most speedy incarnation of Opera in 2012.

Opera1212 very slow; (a lot of folks saying they noticed this)

I must admit that even though I'm using Ad Muncher and it works perfectly well in Comodo Dragon without any extensions, when using FF I still can't stop myself from using NoScript. It comes from having it drilled into me and using it on Linux for some time. Even though there was a slight conflict with AM and NS I've now got them to work together very well on most pages. I gave AM a big old outing looking for as many sites as I could that would spam me with adverts and pop ups and it saved the day.

I also appreciate the info on Opera and Canary.

Its turning out to be a great little program, though I do see some slow down, depending on the website. I'll say this, "cdn.highwebmedia.com" is a little pain in the butt. No matter the website, no matter how "clean" it might otherwise be, running into this sucker brings things to a crawl. That isn't just with AdMuncher though, it hated ABP too. It's a feisty thing.

Some adult sites, I've seen it on TMZ, CHIVE, a few others. It doesn't have the same appreciation for ad-blocking that I do :D
