PeerBlock... Pretty much dead?

Only a miracle, a resurrection, will bring this software back. It's dead.

I'm glad to hear that. The thing is though, the lists and blocking abilities are still there. Consider Peerblock a bit like Proxomitron, the software itself has long stopped being developed, but the filters still work just fine and people are actively tinkering with them.

I agree... for as long as IPv6 doesn't become widely used. With PeerBlock no longer being developed, the time would come it would be pretty much useless.

 

So, I suppose the hope was a mirage itself? That said, I found an interesting comment over Peerblock's own forum regarding funding...

I continue to use ipfilter.dat on good old uTorrent. Too bad most of those (at least free ones) died out, leaving only TBG Blocklists who still generously updates it.

 

Ip-Filter By Hooligan, based on "eMule-Security IP-FILTER V1631" and ipfilter-v0006-ETHNOFUNK-edition are two lists available, mainly on emule direct links.

Developers are pretty opened and tell everyone how they've built the lists, so you can build your own, too.

 

But it still updates and blocks..

 

Damn, lol, there goes the rep of the developer In all honesty, I don't think development will pick back up at this point. I'm still using it because most of the lists still update. But that may change too.

 

I hope not! Still updates and blocks I use this with Maxthon (supports BT works great with PB) go figure, instead of using Chrome which doesn't work with VUZE like it use to with magnets links.

Since PB has gone by the way-side, maybe this is the way to go.

 

BotRevolt is THE new successor to Peerblock - they share the same code but significant enhancements and improvements have been made by the new developers to the original PB base. The Free Edition blocks over a billion "bad" IPs - more than sufficient for home users. If you want to add to the list, you'll have to subscribe to the paid version - for $4.95 a month or $49.00 a year. Its basically an updated IP blocklist firewall based on the old PB.

There's no point in developing new features/providing updates without income for the developers.

You're not forced to upgrade if the free edition meets your needs.

 

Does it revert to free version after non-payment, or do you keep what was paid for?

PB is blocking 3,666,107,564 bad IP's, so I guess I will stick with it until it doesn't work for me.

True. But there are developers who profit from life time licenses. Look at Admuncher, they have been around for 12 years. Look at MBAM Pro and Outpost and a bunch of others that have survived on one time license payment model.

And of course there are those that profit from free model. For example ABP, Avast, FortiClient, AVG, etc...

 

You keep what was paid for. Of course, you will not receive further upgrades and enhancements.

 

It appears the free version lacks something as basic as updates. You'll need to install again just to update their default list.

 

They have updates but only in the paid version.

 

Can I add my own lists, with free version?

 

I have spoken to the developers @ Bot Revolt:

- The program is more stable Installer comes with proper C++ libraries needed to run the driver at max efficiency.

-Run on start-up issue has been fixed

-The are working with honeypots and private list providers to build ip protection


Overall they are delivering a version for less tech savy users. However the full version includes all of the same features as pb.

 

It is not clear whether you can use the free version with ip blocklists like peerblock.
