Pardon me for saying so, but that appears to be URL blocking and i would imagine that it's natural for an antivirus company to be able to feed a list of malware links into the URL blocker, before an amateur testers does. I mean, i know too where to get these links. And if i know where to get them, i sure as hell expect antivirus companies to have them fed to their product if not earlier, at least as soon i as can get them. I mean, in that video there is no sign of actual malware detection and thus quarantining. If i could build "Fuzzfas AV" (assuming i could code), i suppose i could auto-feed all malware links presented in the well known sites that provide malware links. This wouldn't tell anything about my AV's real capabilities, as it would have no engine at all. So Fuzzfas AV would be able to show an impeccable video of "white page URL", based on URL blacklisting, but if the same malware was delivered from an non-blacklisted URL or by other means, it would show that Fuzzfas AV is a placebo AV.

Not to say that Bitdefender is bad, i just don't understand why people even BOTHER to upload such videos on youtube and call that a "test". The only thing that this "test" proves, is that Bitdefender is aware of the pubblically available websites that post infected URL links, from where this "tester" got them and that BitDefender had fed that same list to its product before the "tester" managed to type the URL...

I hope they won't start giving certificiations or awards too to antiviruses, because i will go to Tibet and become monk. Or i will open the "Fuzzfas test center". If they can claim these are tests, i can claim i can test too...

True but there could be false positives on those malware links sites, so av companies need to do their homework too.

That is the question I have raised. It seems there are already a handful of countries where it is "paid", as mentioned earlier in the discussion. I wonder if this free version itself is a trojan horse for a paid version a year from now.

We 're saying the same thing. URL blocking is NOT the same as normal detection of malware. URL blocking is based on avoiding the threat, not on recognizing and dealing with the threat. It's like someone tells you "don't pass from Piccadily Circus right now, there is a shooting going on". Avoiding going there isn't a sign of your survival skills in a gunfight. You can avoid a gunfight, but you can't claim that that's how you survive in a gunfight.

    A blocked URL:

    - May be a false positive.
    - May contain malware that until definitions are out, the engine can't detect and thus if you visit ANOTHER URL with the SAME malware that it's NOT in the URL blacklist, you WILL get infected.
    - May contain malware that the engine CAN detect, but can't contain successfully. Back in my newb days, my AVG detected "Sasser" (?) worm successfully. Unfortunately soon after AVG "tried" to quarantine it, i got the infamous countdown and my PC shut down.

In that video there is no sign that a detection was made by the AV engine. No malware name, no sign about something quarantined, nothing. It's just URL blocker doing all the job. If he really wanted to show how BD handles 0-day malware, he should have either executed live samples (or at least do static scan) or find a way to go there without the URL blocker (maybe possible in paid version, i don't know). Or don't use the usual list of infected sites that everyone knows and seems (what a surprise) that BitDefender also knows.

Cause the only thing that the video currently shows, is that BitDefender has quick feed of blacklisted URLs to their product (kudos) and that BitDefender is aware of the URL blacklists that wannabe testers go to find their malware, so that can impress newbies on youtube. Problem is, for every link the amateurs find, there are a gazillion also infected that they ignore. And URL blocker won't help you there, the engine will.

Funny is, i am sure BitDefender doesn't have to fear anything from a real encounter with an infected site. It's just hilarious watching that "URL block" parade, presented as "test". Test of what? Of the fact that you are wannabe tester who couldn't find in the entire internet a single infected URL before BitDefender?

Just another review from youtube and please don't take it for more than it is...because as we all know, protection is much more than this : -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf-baaHAUPw&feature=em-uploademail- , but it seems that they have a decent scanner :D

Yours is normal. The previous one was an offense to intelligence. At least in yours:

    1) You do say that in the first part, the URL blocker is doing all the work and the engine doesn't move a muscle.
    2) You had the good sense to avoid self-humiliation and before uploading it to youtube, you did static scan, as to actually USE the AV engine. (unlike the previous fellow).

So viewers of your video can learn the difference between URL blocking and actual detection. :thumb:

A good test is : URL executions, then a pack which contains several samples (the best is to check them throught VT to remove quickly all FPs (0/42 ratio or very old samples that happens many times...)

Thus, the user makes a static scan and then execution of samples to see the reaction of proActiv tech ...

Is there any point on using BitDefender TrafficLight with the free AV or is it redundant?

no you don't, you don't need anything with this great product. I am astounded that Bitdefender finally hit the nail on the head. Yep, here it comes.

This is the Product of the Year for 2012 and now 2013.

Hey, I was close with the McAfee prediction. I just didn't realize the tray icon was suppose to be a B and not a M....:argh:

    Salut Iulica,
    How about changing the order : 1. "quarantine" , 2. "disinfect" (delete,deny,etc) ?

PS Congratulations for an excellent romanian antivirus! :thumb:

    It should ALWAYS be:

    1. Disinfect (create backup before disinfecting files)
    2. If fails/cannot be disinfected, Quarantine

This means that if file can be repaird (file infectors), it will be, if it cannot be (worms, trojans and adware/spyware), it will quarantine the files.

This is quite usual setup in most AV's...

So far no false positives on either PC I have it installed on, but it really shouldn't delete. It would be better to leave infected files on the PC than to just delete them if it can't quarantine them.

Also, I noticed it will randomly decide to run a quick or full scan during idle time, thus answering my earlier question on how to run a full scan.

Despite you guys having FP problems, I am quite pleased with it; true BitDefender detection rates, with cloud lightness, all for free!

Gonna sound like a silly question but could I use Malwarebytes free along side this av? It made me uninstall it before it could install.

    thanks

You can try it. I find this program not very friendly to having other anti-malware programs alongside.
