This is actually a very profound observation about the security community. I hereby dub it the "Fuzz Effect." (e.g. when people go overboard out of paranoia, thus causing it to rub off on other people until we start a security arms race)
Big MSE fan here, until a couple of days ago, MSE had not issued any updates in over 36 hours, that is not acceptable, no auto or manual updates, just said, "You have the latest updates." They have no staff on duty during the holidays? Any comments from MSE fans/former fans/anyone else? Pretty disappointing.
I assume you checked this site for updates and found none? http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/HowToMSE.aspx
Here's what I have had - an update on the 23rd and an update on the 24 - So what's the problem? Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.141.2529.0) Installation date: 24-Dec-2012 1:25 PM Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.141.2472.0) Installation date: 23-Dec-2012 12:17 PM
Yes it does. Also svchost needs to be allowed in the firewall internet access and that I don't tolerate since I can't specify M$ many IPs. See my post #439. The situation is the same on XP on Pentium4 of two people I know.
Yes, but there were/are no general problems with MMPC updates for Microsoft antimalware products. Windows 8 Pro & Windows Defender: This morning (December 25th) about 8.30 am : update - 1.141.2549.0 Yesterday evening about 10 pm : update - 1.141.2520.0 Yesterday morning about 8.10 am: update - 1.141.2500.0 Nothing unusual for my own update routine. But as the screenshot shows they released about 9 updates for the last 24 hours. Data taken from Event Viewer. Note that yesterday I was not at home, I was at work and my home computers were switched off. They were not working during the night as well.
No problems with daily updates here. No problem with updates inside the 36 hours the poster mentions as being unable to get them. If I was him I would look to reasons other than Microsoft Updating system as being the cause.
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that by now they would have changed that. No MSE for me then... Merry Xmas.
No issues here. I'm not always connected, but 2 updates on day 23 (one at 00:52 and one at 10:40) and 4 updates on day 24. Therefore, if I were always connected, I'd get at least 6 updates within the period of 33-34 hours.
Lol. I guess you are disappointed because despite of this "lack of updates" you remained clean, right?
"Update signature definitions to resolve performance issues in definitions starting with 1.141.2400.0 Some users of Microsoft antimalware products have reported a performance issue with signature definition versions starting with 1.141.2400.0 (12/21/2012 1920 UTC). The current definition files, since 1.141.2639.0 (12/27/2012 0625 UTC), resolve this issue. If you have a signature set in the affected range, please update to the current definition files." - Ronjor Told 'ya
I've gotta say that I haven't noticed any updating problems on three separate computers for several days.

No problems here on updates - I don't have Windows Updates set to 'auto' - so whenever I check updates (maybe twice daily) there usually seems to be a definition update waiting.
Anyone else trialing the MSE4.2 Beta/PreRelease, currently v4.2.2110? Changes from current stable release unknown?
No. I am on manual updates, but the definition updates are received and installed automatically, usually once per day.
