Internet remains unregulated as UN Internet treaty fails

A proposed global telecoms treaty that would give national governments control of the internet has been blocked by the US and key western and African nations. They said they are “not able to sign the agreement in its current form” at the end of a International Telecoms Union (ITU) conference in Dubai.

not really understand what the big deal about this is... the more internet oppressive government such as UK, China, Russia will do their own filtering no matter what.

 

It is important that such restrictive measures are not written and signed into a treaty, but other than that there is no real difference. Internet will never be "safe" from any dictatorial regime in the world...

 

At least we still have anonymity software like Tor, but some countries are making that illegal too. Also more and more Tor nodes are controlled by government agencies so that is increasingly compromising Tor's anonymity.

It's not as though the US has never expressed interest in its own kinds of censorship... I'd be cautious about the optimism, I think.

Presumably conspiracy-related stuff. I daresay that such statements give the UN too much credit, seeing how (in)effective it's been in recent history.

 

Exactly that ! Research what they are Really about, & you'll understand. For eg, Billions of $ in carbon tax to be paid by western taxpayers to them, for "supposed" man made global warming / climate change, when it's ALL lies
