Looking for advice on using a Vpn for android phone

Hello all, this is my first post and Im not sure if this is the correct section for this Qs. Feel free to move it.

Im using a HTC cha cha and thinking of using a VPN from the top 5 list on Lifehacker. It was poste on another thread here but I. cant find the link.

BolehVpn, Astril, Hamachi,Private Internet Access and Witopia are the providers recommended.

Has anyone experience of using one on ttheir phone and if so what are the dos and donts of using one.

Should they be used for online banking and Public wifi.

Just checked & Mullvad have a android application listed on their webpage. Looks easy to install going by their other software & I imagine you can use it across multiple platforms with the 1 license?

I think I'm going to go with them for my next VPN. They have been tried and tested.

Going by the above a VPN provider must be selected first that uses OpenVpn and then Arne Schwabs app OpenVpn for Android should be used with it.

I havent a clue about how to select a VPN provider so was going by Lifehackers recommends.

It says here that only Android 4 upwards is supported. Any android lower that that doesnt encrypt unless the phone is rooted.

Im on Gingerbread so what are the options from here?

Ive read other threads here saying Mullvad has been associated with some dodgy users.

I dont want to subscribe to some sinister vpn provider.

Does anyone know if there are problems using a VPN with a Phone Network .

Yes it does have it's fair share of PEDO"S & Hackers, I've seen it mention on TOR hidden services so make of that what you will. But it's a great service, 5 euro a month you can't beat it.

Been loading slow(very) last few hrs., checked link before I posted and it was OK.
Give them some time to get it sorted.

 

Didn't anyone mention HOTSPOT SHIELD, works in android phone and its free too.

I wouldn't use HOTSPOT SHEILD ever. I'd be surprised if their wasn't a huge catch for a free service, there surely is one.

 

If that's insecure what chances are their the paid version would deliver security, has their been anycase of identity theft after using a free VPN service.

 

Since you are on Gingerbread, have a look at FeatVPN. I haven't used it in a year or so, so take a look at what you would need as far as certs go, connection setup, etc...

If you decide to somehow upgrade to Jellybean by unlocking and rooting if your carrier hasn't pushed the update yet, then you can just download the OpenVPN *.ovpn file (embedded certs if possible, AirVPN offers this) from your provider and use the OpenVPN app by Arne Schwab. It doesn't need root, but I don't think Gingerbread can use it because of the way the stack is exposed .vs Honeycomb or Jellybean. The addedd benefit of rooting, is that you can also use Tor, via Orbot from the Guardian Project.
