That 24 update cycle is absolute nonsense. Thankfully developers of Roboscan weren't complete dorks and have left it free to change. I think it's the same for Ad-aware Free as well last time i checked it. I like it that they don't make absurd limitations and the 24 hour update check cycles certainly are.

User at wilder get anal about I/O reading, RAM usage, CPU picks, psycho pulses and whatever. But if you are not so Task Manager stressed then you will be fine with ZA. Normally it feels light on systems (loading more in RAM than writing on HD). :)

Yes, I always pay more attention on how the AV degrades the system performance in "real-time" than watching its memory usage.

I'm a bit confused over Lavasoft and Unthreat scored on VB100 RAP. They both use Vipre, but Unthreat is basically down at the bottom and Lavasoft is up with the best. Now i don't know what versions exactly are used but its still strange.

Yeah except when after installing your AV, you can no longer use your computer.

Of course, there is always software that do not play nice with certain systems.

I wouldn't recommend UnThreat. Last I checked it was buggy, they are doing very poorly on VBulletin, and there is a thread somewhere about the new owners being shady.

I'm not sure which Lavasoft version the RAP test uses, but I thought Ad-Aware Pro uses Gdata instead of VIPRE and the Personal & Free editions used VIPRE. Maybe that's why Ad-Aware and Gdata are close in the test results. I'm not sure why GFI and Unthreat are so far apart though. I think GFI has a built in firewall and some behavior monitors now that Unthreat may lack.

Outdated. It's still version 2011 and they don't seem to be doing anything lately...

Yeah, but the global english version is still 2011. Plus, what sucks the most is that Active Defense, the main thing that makes Rising interesting doesn't work on modern 64bit systems. Which makes Rising protection horribly crappy.

For fear of this becoming an AvB, cos if it does the paranoid androids will close the thread.
Best advice is download them, try them, then make up your mind!
Everyone's systems are different and as such will generate different results per AV package.

If no form of A vs B is allowed, then whats the point of the forum then?

If i were you i'd give a try to Roboscan IS Free really. My No.1 favorite AV for computers used by novice users. BitDefender engine gives good detection, you can set it up to clean the malware automatically and doesn't require to input a serial number on annual basis like some others. And i quite like it as alternative. I've decided to use it till avast! 8 beta comes out. And so far it's my top pick. I just don't understand it how i haven't heard enough of it to give it a try long ago...

Second option behind this one would be AVG with similar characteristics. Only downside is that Roboscan checks for updates even every hour, AVG only ever 24 hours...

Ad-aware Free with AV is also pretty good but has to be registered annually like avast! and i don't like that because users who aren't into AV's probably won't even bother to re-register it and thats bad...

I installed Ad-Aware Free onto one of my laptops a few days ago, and from what little use of it I've had so far am really liking it.

After the install and required reboot I was worried about continual disk access - the hdd light was always on. However, after a few minutes everything went back to normal, and so far seems very light. If it stays that way it will keep it, otherwise there a few more avs on Raymond's list I'll give a try.

Yeah, Ad-aware is a bit slow on first scan(s) until it populates the cache a bit.

You can always fire up the task manager and add the columbs CPU Time and i/o reads/writes. This will help make an objective comparison with other AVs. This one has Vipre engine, right?

I understand that, but I had just rebooted Windows after installing and had not started a scan yet.

Yes it's using Vipre. When I tried Vipre years ago it was causing a noticable slow down despite not showing high CPU use under task manager.

Interesting. If i get bored with Avast, i will try it. I am curious. To tell the truth, i wasn't even aware Lavasoft was giving free antivirus.
