I noticed some sites selling security software very cheap.
One example is this one.
Can we trust this sites?
What's the catch?

 

With DownloadCrew, no catch

The vendor recommends a price (RRP/MSRP) and sells license codes (in bulk) cheaper to the entity that wishes to resell them. Now the pricing is determined by the reseller - it's a deal of how much units you wish to sell versus the profit margin per unit sold. The deal with online stores is that you don't need to get boxes/manuals printed so you can directly pass the savings on to the consumer.

1 year and a half ago i purchased my previous EAM + OA licenses from one of those discount websites and everything was fine.
Not sure about downloadcrew though.

 

The managing director of Creativemark (developer of DownloadCrew's software store) is easily approachable on Wilders with username chriswiles. It's perfectly safe; I have never had any problem buying from them.

There are many reasons why someone may sell something cheaper; the prices listed by the vendor are just recommended prices - it doesn't mean you have to sell at that rate. If you sell at a cheaper rate and still manage a decent bottom line (i.e. return/profit) there's no issue (well, there are, but nothing that's a show stopper)

 

I've purchased many software licenses off Download-crew's on-line store and never had a single issue.

Its thanks to them that many of us can get full licenses at affordable prices.

it is just fine with it . I have bought from both DC and V3 and it have had no problems so far. Bought yesterday from v3 PCTOOLS IS for just 10 bucks

Same here and I have had some great deals on Bullguard/BitDefender.

 

DownloadCrew Is great. I bought Avast Pro for $9.95. It is running great. I think that the license time does not start until installed.

Kinda off topic; but why this sudden interest in PC Tools IS? I observed that Duradel is also using it at the moment!

But yes, great deal for 10 bucks; especially considering that PC Tools allows retail renew; i.e. buy 4 licenses at $10 each and get 4-years 3 PC license in one single account

Got two copy's of Bitdefender AV Plus for $ 5.95 each from DC with no problems at all but I downloaded the software direct from vendor BD and entered the license codes given from Cleverbridge.:thumb

 

Since the symantec is the one included and i had for a long time had a desire to try it . I really hated it before. The free version was a crap . The IS is very simple but strong and lighter than the others . I like it so far.
Long term licenses i do not like .

 

Good to know. I myself have been using it on and off for the last year, and it's much better now than it was a year ago - they've done a great job fine tuning it, ironing out bugs and fixing performance issues over the year.

I'm sure most of the people here won't be for long term licenses; it's just an option for someone who wishes to go that way. However, it's good that with DownloadCrew that you can just purchase a new license at these low prices and just enter the key and extend the product rather than paying the vendor's higher renewal rates (for e.g. BullGuard and PC Tools).

 

I also noticed that the free version was relatively useless since the user is unable to remove any malware off the system with it.

Personally I've got HitManPro, MalwareBytes and boot disk scanners for removing malware, I only need a program capable of protecting my PC enough so that I don't need to worry about malware infecting the computer in the first place.

The protection score in the latest Windows 7 test on AV test was 5/6 but the repair score for PC Tools IS 2012 is a low 2.5/6. Even though PC Tools 2012 has access to Symantec's antivirus database, Norton achieved a better protection score of 5.5/6 and a repair score of 4.5/6. Both products had a usability score of 4/6.

What does intrigue me is that they did fairly well in the AV Comparatives 2012 testing. From the period covering January 2012 - November 2012 only 0.7% of malware infected the test PCs used which is 'almost' the same % Kaspersky has. The main issue I've noticed is the high amount of user dependent actions (around 5.5%) that needed to be taken to achieve that figure.

I initially got some prompts asking for permission for some programs such as Ad Muncher to be allowed to run as local proxies which was a bit confusing at first. I took it as PC Tools wanting me to identify which programs should be allowed full access to the system.

BitDefender was fairly heavy on the web traffic scanning. I've noticed this program doesn't impact on that at all. I am able to browse internet sites at lightning speeds similar to Webroot.

In the end for $9.95 from Download Crew its was a bargain for a 3 PC license. Might put it on a relative's PC because they were looking for something light which will protect their computer from the majority of the baddies on the internet.

 

It does do better in AV-C's removal test; so there's some oddity there. Detection rates are generally slightly better for Norton because they have pulse updates and insight technology, whereas PC Tools has a different cloud (though sharing data with Symantec) and no pulse updates.

The only real con I noted was that it only updates once a day on the comprehensive database. Although it hasn't (so far) been an issue in the real world, I think they should step up the update frequency a bit.

It's the firewall - it doesn't automatically configure rules using an internet lookup or whitelist like some others do - instead it asks the user. You can further harden the firewall by setting "Enhanced Security Permissions" to High (Settings--->Firewall--->Filtering--->Slider bar for ESP). The alerts are then a lot more detailed and tell you what exactly is going down.

It's set to medium by default as sometimes a few applications have issues with this setting on High.

 

Perhaps members could list other good Legit sites in addition to DownloadCrew or has this been done already?

 

My version was set to Low by default in this case. I've set it to high now and have already had a few prompts (possibly tracking cookies) and forced it to block them by default.

If this becomes too tedious might move it back to medium and see how that goes. I like how detailed the prompts are after making that change though so I can actually look up where these low risk threats are coming from.

Going to start posting these comments about the program in Gery's PC Tool's thread since were getting off topic.

Basically there won't be any issues purchasing software off DownloadCrew and they make it as simple as possible to get started with any of the products they sell.

Is "Extended Download Insurance" important?
From what i've read it's only important if i change computer and that's not on my plans.
The only thing i might do is a reinstall windows (format, clean install, not restore).

Well, the site saves your order details for only 30 days by default, and on purchasing the extended download insurance that is extended to two years. So, in the case you lose your purchase emails or license codes, you can look it up on the site.

I don't think you need it, but it's there for those who want that additional assurance.
