Install ESS v5, reboot and it's gone.. ???

How is this possible. I'm very confident that my machine is clean.

Been running ESS for some time now and NOD-32 before that. Was just upgrading from the latest version of ESS v4 to the latest of ESS v5. Install went fine. Rebooted and when I came back into Windows it was gone! Win 7 was asking me to enable it as it gave it as an option but after selecting it (via the solve PC issues in the task bar) it would never clear the message. I started looking around and found remnants of v4. Which I had completely uninstalled and ran CCleaner before and after reboot before installing v5.

Reinstalling v5 now. What is up?

Running Win 7 64bit Pro with 8Gb of RAM.

 

Have you deleted all Eset registry keys and all its files and folders?

 

I ran the uninstall with the Eset v4 app. The used CCleaner to cleanup before and after reboot and then did the v5 install.

I did not take the time to do a cleanup that Eset should handle. At that level.

Just to check, did you run the ESET Uninstall Tool between uninstalling v4 and installing v5?

Using Win7 I did the uninstall from Add/Remove Programs.

ESET actually does recommend using the uninstall app created in the program's Start Menu entry and not the Uninstall or Change a Program applet in the Control Panel.

Dear Aryeh, can you provide technical details about why do you recommend this?

Isn't it the same - the one from Control Panel is supposed to start the ESET setup file, which will perform the uninstallation of ESET products ?

Yes, I know and understand it but I ask about the technical reasons behind this recommendation ?

 

I can't give you the technical reasons, but it is a well known fact that using the Windows uninstaller does not always uninstall everything, including files in use and registry entries that may or may not be opened. Many programs have standalone uninstallers to get around some of the limitations of uninstalling while Windows is still running.

I've done the uninstallation process of ESS a couple of times and I found out that the uninstallation application from the Start Menu and the Control Panel are totally the same application which will open the exact same process.
So why does Eset recommend using the uninstall application from the Start Menu anyway?
