    @ King Grub.

I've just indicated that on a regular basis, IKARUS AV is always showing excellent results.
I think AV-Comparatives should include IKARUS AV in their tests.
The same is for Norton AV.

Have they done anything to decrease FP rate?

better FP than not detecting something...the FP could be uploaded and scanned with VT/Jotti etc.

    i'd disagree with that
if a program shows me too many FPs for perfectly benign objects, it would keep me on toes for a short while,
but sooner or later i'd grow tired and stop taking the detection seriously, which would lead to user side errors (whitelisting malign objects believing them to be FP)

In my personal view vendors should try and maintain a delicate balance between both Detection Rate and False Positives

I too think that FPs are better than missing, however FPs can be a pain too. I have tested IKARUS on Windows 7 32/64bit installs and on Windows 8 64bit all with common programs and haven´t seen a single FP while testing.

In terms of detection IKARUS looks to be top notch. But it doesn´t have something like HIPS for zerodays and it slows a bit my PC, mainly when starting programs. But i really like the clean and easy interface. IKARUS does its job not more and not less.

That is my reason for not using it as well. On several fresh systems on high-end PCs, it simply makes opening applications slow. Even something simple like the Event Viewer takes a noticable time to open, going from instant to taking a second or two. Which is a pity, since I like pretty much everything else about the program. I don't need or want any bells and whistles, just a straight-forward signature-based AV with good detection and a clean interface, and Ikarus fits that bill.

Well i helped myself with this problem excluding some processes that i start regularly but keeping all internet related processes scanned. However the start of Thunderbird or Opera feels like it takes ages to start.

I doubt that amateur test's sample set; because Norton, PC Tools and Ikarus are scoring way too high on that test and these three are known to sometimes flag suspicious packers and low reputation files (through cloud) as malware. These three are good, but never #1 IMO in on-demand scan tests :)

As for Ikarus; product is okay as long as you don't have FP issues with it.

I personally don`t need to care about amateur tests as long as av-comparatives did test the product.
Regarding the detection of packers and crypters i learned my lesson and changed my mind. We had the discussion of sense or nonsense detecting them years ago. I knew some talented script kiddies writing malware to sell and they showed me how easy it is to avoid detection. The only common point was a HIPS or to detect the packer or crypter instead of the malware itself that is way too easy to obfuscate. Sure detecting the packer is no "art" but it is effective and i remember that these guys were scared by an other antivirus product because of its detection of packers and crypters.
As for IKARUS there may be better alternatives in terms of detection around but as long at it fits my needs i feel good with it, not to mention that i like to play around with antiviruses and IKARUS is my new toy for the moment.

What? . . . NIS with the highest detection?
Not saying it's impossible but all other testing organizations say otherwise.

Not saying it's an "evil", but because of this, it's possible that an amateur may think a safe file is actually malware when it's not. That is why I have doubts on the sample set.

Exactly. NIS has never been #1 in detection in any other test (though it is good); amateur or not (even considering virus.gr and those other older tests).

"all other testing organizations say otherwise"

Could you provide some links to those "other organizations"?
So far, I was able to find only one Russian web-site with AV tests, conducted on a regular (almost) daily basis.

AV-Test, AV-Comparatives and tons of other "amateur" / "independent" testers. (There are a couple more testing organizations but i forgot their names)
If you read my post you will notice i said DETECTION, Norton in the last few years have never been known to have the highest detection of all, their product strength seems to be the overall suite but not the detection. :D :thumb:

These Russian folks sure hate their "own" products, Kaspersky is brought to its knees on this "test" and Dr.Web isn't even mentioned there :D :D :D

I've received a response from the Russian forum about the high detection rates for Norton's AV products in their AV tests.
The testers from safetygate.ru told me that most AV test in the West were done by using compressed .zip and 7-zip files. Norton Download Insight does not work with those zip files; therefore, the low detection scores for Norton AV.
At the Russian forum, they are using RAR files; therefore, Norton is able to scan every file.
Also, the testers are saying that the latest generation Norton reputation-based security technology helps a lot.

Norton's reputation based security, while empirically effective, does cause a few headaches of it's own. Even the average poor guy developing a free app needs to buy digital signatures for his app, or else Norton flags every new version as suspicious based on reputation analysis.

IMO my previous comments still stand. I'm however wondering what causes the 10% gap between PC Tools and Norton. I'm guessing it's Norton Insight + Pulse Updates. Can you ask? :)
