When comodo FireWall with D+ runs fine, I would suggest the following
    1. Install Comodo Program Manager
At installation it checks the AV data base, so is a last resort.

    2. Install HitmanPro free
Run a weekly quick scan and tell them to right click any downloaded file

    3. Install Comodo Dragan and choose to enable Secure DNS check of Comodo

Had a look and think this is done with the system images, however it seems to be a good tip. Thanks!

Where can I download this? http://www.surfright.nl/en/home/ No free version there unfortunately.

DNS is done with Google Public DNS and OpenDNS. So far fine with those. The router actually has 3 DNS entries, hence the OpenDNS one for the 3rd entry and the first 2 with Google Public DNS. Running Comodo Secure DNS in the past blocked some sites that were a false positive and completely fine.

OK, will give that a look at now. Thanks for the tip!
edit: WOW Panda is REALLY light.. curious now. Does it really protect? Experiences with it? Thanks again!!

OK, so Panda Cloud Free seems to work OK. What are people's experiences with it? Is it reliable? It works and does not make the system slow. So this is great. But does it also protect well? So far from the tests it found a few things that Avira did not find or label as suspicious, removed it and good.

Are there any good alternatives to Panda Cloud Free worth mentioning that are likewise lightweight?

I've been using Panda Cloud Free for a while, I can say PCAV has a very very good detection rate :thumb:
the downside is that I found a few more false positive (only a few) compared to EAM.

and if you want to go lighter, you can always ditch AV and go naked
kees1958 has some good post on how be naked and happy :D
personally I like sandboxie as the main solution

as for alternative , you can try Prevx Free / WSA (no free version)

just use sandboxie and AppGuard. both work well. while AppGuard is not free well worth the money.

Thanks!! Will surly give that a try. Does it have options for making network rules like Comodo Firewall? If not does it co-exist happily?

So far it seems solid. Thanks!

Nice, where is that post please? Or what topic would that be in?

    No experience with Comodo, sorry.

PFW was OK, but seemed to have a very late startup.

Now, I'm just using Defence Wall Personal Firewall, with default settings, and with XP built-in Firewall turned on. Very quick responses by this old system.

Again I only connect to the internet to do patch Tuesday, as the Celerion is too slow for my regular web surfing, You-tube viewing, etc. [Good for word-smithery].

    ***************
However I am thinking of either on-demand scanners, or Avast7 as a resident
    {in preference to Panda CAV after considering Kees1985 post here...... https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=2024756#post2024756 }

    ****************
If using your PC for more regular internet access, then by all means consider supplementing Defence Wall Personal FW.

    cheers,

    @Feandur thanks for your reply.

I looked at Kees1985 post as well as the lots of screenshots for Avat 7 Free from here: http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/Avast-Home-Edition-Screenshot-6474.html.

Avast 7 does look like it has a lot more options than Panda Free, now the only question is if those can all be used or if some will pop-up a message saying "to use this feature please upgrade to the Pro version".

If not and considering the speed Avast 7 Free should do the trick.

Unfortunately new software and new system images have been made in the meantime, but since this is really crucial we will revert back and test more and then later slap the other software back on.

The Security Center service is disabled completely, also working from an Admin account only, yes risky but with Comodo and D+, common sense and a bit of knowledge that seems to work out.

The person running this seems happy. Will report back after the Avast 7 trial has been done.

Still trying to find Kees1985 about "going naked".

    @All
Thanks for all the help and really good tips. I guess the times of a slow system with Avira 10 are finally over, not only for this client but for all others that might be in a similarly environment with similar specs. Really THANKS!!

    edit:
No really after seeing all those 64 screenshots I am amazed it is the Free version, what more would one need when the Free version has all this under the hood. Surly giving this a try before the weekend and will report back. This is super exciting news!! Thanks again all!! :)

OK, I tested Avast 7 and this is a definite NO GO.

    1.
First it tried to install Google Chrome during install without either telling me that it will be part of the installation nor informing me about it. Why the heck would I need Google Chrome when all I am looking for is a lightweight/fast AV? Luckily we were not connected to the net during install (did this on purpose to see how well that goes..). Being a FF Portable user I never use Chrome, only maybe the portable version if at all, neither did the person running this machine. Why did it not tell me about this Google Chrome thing beforehand? Last time this happened was back in 95 when I had no clue and lots of toolbars etc were installed without confirmation from some dodgy 3rd party. Tz tz tz..

    2. Then after the install was done with a double-click on the neat icon bottom right (have to say the icon is neat), it would take ages to come up, and once up showed up the typical "Not Responding" message in the top line of the window, known for software that crashed, came up. Waited more, tired ctrl+alt+del to fire up the Task Manager but that did not come up. Had to pull the plug and re-boot.

    3. After re-boot again it would take ages to show me the program window, once it did, it said you have to register after 30 days to keep up to date with the virus signatures etc. So this again, after first trying to install Google Chrome it tells me I need to register is, at least for me, another definite NO GO.

    4. When trying to change any of the many settings it stalled again leading to a 2nd pulling the plug and re-boot.

Given this short 15 minutes of Avast 7 Free experience we are glad we had a system image with all the software and Panda done before this little test run. Now back on Panda and even if it might not have all these great settings it runs smooth, fast, does not stall and protects well so far. Avast 7 Free good bye! Thanks for the tip though.

Others might have completely different experiences or opinions, this was done on a freshly installed XP SP2, so no virus or other stuff were involved in this complete fail. Nevertheless I am glad we gave it a shot. Thanks ;)

    Frank7,

On a slightly different note, has anyone figured out how much this extra interactive cloud costs in terms of bandwidth usage? I ask as I tether a computer through a 3g connection and bandwidth caps are a sad reality for me.

    Tks for listening.

Re: Comprehensive List of FREE Anti-Virus

A very complete list with 26 different products listed of 3 webpages. I hadn't heard of some of the free antiviruses.

I thought Raymond might have missed Roboscan, but it is on the last page.

It's good to see Raymond posting again. His website has been very quiet lately - but he does have a post explaining why at raymond.cc

Is the list in random order or is it from "best" to "worst"? o_O

Some of them on the last pages look like they are all a copy of the same AV that looks like a rogue...
