I once cleaned an infected computer that still had mse running in the background under the rogue av asking me to send the file for analysis.

I tend to think most AV companies will actually move to other platforms and gradually leave Windows-based systems to Microsoft alone.
I work for Charter and we get everyday hundreds of calls reporting computers getting infected by the 'FBI virus' ransomware. All types of systems, with any AV, you name it.
Ransomware is the new trend. Well, not that 'new' anyways.

I've seen the same thing, But with Avast on one computer and AVG on another. It all depends on the Malware, No A/V is perfect.

I have honestly seen this with just about every antivirus program out there and some time or another.

According to the above mentioned report, MSE has a third of the AV-market in North America, and around 15% worldwide. Given the amount of installations of the software and IF it is as bad as the bashers of it says it is, we should by now see a rise of malware infections going through the roof.

None of the major AV-companies as far as I can tell has reported or seen this happen since millions of users switched to MSE. No media coverage of this exists either, none that I can find while casually searching the net anyhow.

Therefore, I can only draw the conclusion that MSE actually works as intended. MSE is helping average computer users with decent safe surfing habits and little or no interest in security software battle the few malware they run across. For free, mind you. It is not the "best" AV out there, and it sure do has problems with zero-day malware (rogues) which I am certain Microsoft is aware of and are working on. It is futile to bash an AV saying " I got malware so it does not work", as others already pointed out, no AV is 100%.

For me, it works, giving me the added protection I expect from it besides using common sense. It is light, barely noticeable on my Win 7 system no matter what I do, gaming, surfing, starting up, turning off... I rarely scan my computer since I believe real-time protection nowadays is the frontline against malware so scanning times are not an issue as far as I am concerned. (No I am not sitting with a stop watch in my hand timing it and comparing it to other AVs, OMG, get a life people...) When I do scan with it, I find it no slower or faster than many other AVs I have used during the years. When I scan with other security software from time to time like MBAM or webscanners such as F-Secure or others they come up empty handed.

By all means, please let the discussion proceed about MSE down to its neardiest details, but keep in mind who and what the product primarily is for and remember its price tag.

    Be safe out there!

Regards to you all, bashers and lovers of MSE alike,
    Joakim

People complain for MSE and I don't understand this at all. I am using this AV, plus my common sense, plus 2 free other products (Sandboxie and MBRAM) and I don't get any virus.

    The habits are these ones:
    Don't download cracked files
    don't browse porno sites
don't open files from usb, without scanning it
    use https
    use a keyscrambler, protected browser,

and trust me, you will never get an virus. MSE will protect you at best.

Yes. Be good and virtuous, and you will never get a virus. But the purpose of anti-malware programs is to protect you, when you in fact do all the "forbidden" things.

Might as well disconnect your computer from the internet.

Yeah I bashed it into tiny pieces. Then I tried avast, avg, roboscan, kingsoft and all of them had their own sets of problems/annoyances. I now came back to MSE and I run it alongside with MBAM Pro. Both of them should supplement each other in detection so I feel considerably safe. And the huge upside of MSE is that it has been the lightest AV on my system.

I'm still running MSE on three separate computers. I have been running MSE for over two years. My Win 7 x64 desktop has only ever ran MSE. It works fine. I have never been infected while running MSE. It has not given me any problems. I have no need or reason to replace it with anything.

Which free firewall would you suggest running beside MSE other than the windows one?

I did try MSE v4 on an old Pentium3 laptop with XP on it.
Ditched it. Back to Avast or just Kerio and SSM.
    1. It had a red icon unless I scanned the computer every day which tells me they don't adequately watch what's going on (no runtime?)
    2. It needed Windows update service to run all the time, horrors.
    3. It needed Background intelligent transfer ... service to run all the time
    4. Required me to change all my Kerio rules to permit svchost access to ANY remote IP since Microsoft's servers are all over this universe
    5. Win firewall was ok when Kerio was off, but their logging report is nearly unreadable
    6. Windows update ran forever
    7. Getting MSE update was flaky at best. Often two-three days behind.

It is funny to write/say aneckdots with no facts.

    Here are some F=A=C=T=S:
    1. You first get yellow icon if you haven't run some scan (full or quick) in few days (3 or 5). Scans can be performed automatically and take seconds (quick scan). Than - if your computer was not updated for many days - the same. And after a week - you get a red icon.
    2. Yes, most/all Microsoft products require Windows update service and related libraries to update. I don't know what is wrong with that. I am sure you'll agree that Microsoft products can't use Symantec Live update to receive updates. You don't need to have WU set to Automatic - MSE uses just the WU service/API.
    3. BITS is connected with WU service
    7. Microsoft Malware Protection Center pushes updates at least 3 times per day (this is the typical situation). At the moment I'm running with updates created about 6-7 hours ago. "Often 2-3 days behind" is a blatant lie. By default MSE updates once in 24 hours but that can be changed by those who want to.

MSE on my XP rig had the same red icon for no reason as well. It runs great on my Wife's W7 machine, but not my work XP machine, that's for sure.

Yes, I update WD on Windows 8 as well - the same way

    Here is how:

    Start Notepad.
Copy and paste into the new txt file this:
    Code:
    cd "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\"
    start /min mpcmdrun.exe -Signatureupdate
Save the text file as a .bat file (change to all files and save it as updatewd.bat - this is just an example)
    update.PNG

Then go to Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Task Scheduler and create a new scheduled task to run updatewd.bat when you want (for example 5 times per day and/or at log on).

This will make WD automatically check for new updates as often as you want :)

If you really don't know then it doesn't warrant a full response.

There's another approach, which will still use the process MpCmdRun.exe to update, of course. But, this approach will make the tray icon show that it's updating. Always nice to see that it's updating... for those who like it.

Simply schedule a task for the program "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe" with the arguments -Update -hide

    -edit-

Not sure if Windows Defender in Windows 8 has a tray icon, though. But, it will work for the other O.Ss where MSE can be installed.

There seem to be pros and cons for each antivirus. I was running Avast for a time and really liked it - then it had problems and I got my first BSOD because of it. That's when I switched back to MSE. I have had at different times, Norton, AVG, MSE, Avast, and Kingsoft and each has good and bad. Presently I have MSE and Kingsoft, which seem to work well together. I feel any antivirus is better than none - no matter which I use, good browsing habits are important.

    That's offensive.
No anecdotes. The facts and annoyances I listed are from my laptop, not yours.

The fact Microsoft releases around 4 updates a day I dont know why MSE and windows defender arent set to update multiple times a day by default.
