It all depends on how it was detected. If it was detected as PUP or with a specific name related to TCPIP name, then it's not a mistake or a failure.

    update Avast has caused damage
Were damaged computers with tcpip.sys connection is set to 100 instead of the 10th
see -https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=110828.0- and massive problem from Avast Free in XP SP3.
When trying to ping indicates "no ip device driver" or something like that.Avast was installed
The problem is when avast detects this Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen (various versions) and Conficker, avast does not clean up,and if the report that he has cleared the file.avast delete tcpip.sys

This is a big problem if it affects you. I haven't heard of this '100 connection' modification before. Fortunately not a single user has reported it to me. (Maybe they can't email me because their TCP/IP isn't working.)

Patching a system file (thus breaking its digital signature and maybe even the Windows Update process) is of course a very risky thing in many aspects.

I'm not trying to defend Avast here (it indeed was a FP) but I'm just saying that the problem wasn't entirely unexpected. The home page of some of the patching tools actually talk about problems with other virus scanners in the past as well.

    Thanks
    Vlk

Vlk, does only the ones who patched the file got the false positive?

    Yes.
It also seems that some pirate/cracked distributions of Windows XP came with this driver pre-patched (and who knows what all else was patched as well).

Thanks. I did not read this on avast forums and then it could have seem a bigger failure for the ones who did not read this.
