Hi, after very long time using avira paid, I switched to the free version for some months, although company pays for security at office. I am not persuading you to do the same but the paid version's features were completely useless for me, i.e. firewall and web-av. Still I feel I have excellent protection (anti-malware don't find anything) and light, even at home PCs which are 4-5 years old. On kids PCs I added the web-av. The two only things that I don't like are: slow boot at all PCs whilst umbrella is opening-updates checked and some false positives if heuristics set to high and all categories of malware are checked. Kick a$$ old school av.

In my experience, I too see the slight slow boot as a known behavior on all pc's I have Avira installed in. However, it's a very minor lag compared to other av-solutions that will make your beard grow until your system is ready for you, so to speak. As for the false positives, even if you set heuristics to "high" detection and leave the "threat categories" to its default values, you will hardly see any FP in "years" under normal use ;)

I've had one FP and I'm going into my third year. Heuristics set to high. All threat categories checked.

i found the problem .In fact the support found there was a conflict with Kingsoft PC Doctor . I uninstalled KPD and it installed just fine . But after that it slowed my browsing very badly so i just removed it and went to KIS

Avira is my first choice for AV because their detection rates have for years been among the best. I use Kingsoft as a real-time companion (using its Quick Monitor). I also have Comodo Internet Security running (AV disabled, but run it as a second opinion). Also as second opinion I use Emsisoft, Panda Cloud Cleaner and Malwarebytes (and sometimes an AV rescue disk from Kaspersky, DrWeb or Avira).

I always used Avira with all threat categories and heuristics set to high. I don't mind a few false positives if it means better protection, especially because dangerous zero-day viruses will be detected by heuristics. In my experience, the number of FPs is low even with high heuristics, so it's well worth the trouble.

Boot times are a little slow, but as others have commented there are AVs that slow down your boot times more. Plus I don't find it slows down computer use (although there are faster options like Comodo AV). If you think Avira is slowing down boot times too much, maybe you selected Secure Start instead of Normal Start, but this can be changed, just run:

    "C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avconfig.exe" /wizard
    or
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avconfig.exe" /wizard

and select Normal Start. Secure Start will load earlier and thus check more boot components, slowing boot down. In my opinion this added security is useful only on a few cases. Best thing to verify if you truly have a clean boot/system is to use an AV rescue disk.

On the down side, Avira has ads (which have become kind of bizarre lately with "do outrageous things on Facebook" stuff), but they only appear as separate windows after updates, and disappear with one click, so it's not that annoying (much less annoying than Panda Cloud Free with in-product ads). More annoying is the fact they try to push the Ask toolbar, which is bundled into their web protection. But I don't find that web protection so useful, and if you don't install the toolbar you get a clean AV which works very well.

Comparatively, the other A's of the triple A free antiviruses lag far behind (especially when dealing with Brazilian malware, from where I live). Both Kingsoft and Comodo are better (from what I could observe) than AVG, which is not good enough imo, and Avast, which is by far the worst at catching Brazilian malware. Avira on the other hand fares very well, on the level of Kaspersky.

I've just got a huge update with Avira - 119 files + reboot - something that happens once in a blue moon. Anybody has any info about it?

This sounds a little paranoid. One of the things I love about running linux distros, like Mint is your PC FLIES.. One of the reasons I suspect is all of these 'extra' programs under windows really start to slow down it's operations.

This is why I switched to a minimalistic approach to windows, and it runs quite a bit better.

This setup I use doesn't slow down my computer at all - that is, no more than the normal relatively minor slow-down that an antivirus causes. Avira is the on-access AV, paired with Kingsoft (using its Quick Monitor). Kingsoft itself has Avira integrated (so far not the latest stable version, but 2013 version will have it again) so they run together very well. By using KAV's Quick Monitor it only scans when you run an executable (plus its Boundary Defense which scans downloads etc). I find no performance impact from it. Comodo Internet Security has its AV component disabled, so it doesn't interfere with the previous two. CIS's Defense+ and Sandbox components make sure that anything that escapes the double AV defense will be either executed with limited privileges or inside a safe environment. Again, the performance impact of Comodo is low.

I'm sure I could run a more minimalistic setup, as I use common sense as my first line of defense, that is, I avoid shady websites and downloads. But I prefer to have the added security because you just never know for sure. I am also a performance nut, and I wouldn't run this setup if I felt it impacted performance too much.

Nothing on the Avira forum (Company and Product news) where they often give update info.

Trust me, don't love any antivirus. Find a real person to love. Antivirus programs are such mind-changing creatures and are being controlled by other invisible creators from behind. One day you love them and they love you, next day they will betray you. The end is always the same - you'll sorry about your love. As soon as you realize this, you'll feel better. Trust me, I have been on your way ;)

And many other users gave up. The company's bad practises ruined what was once a lovely and great antivirus product

I bought it at a greater discount directly from Avira last December but I don't have to renew until the end of May so come on Avira give us a better offer.
