Windows 8 Users - Which Anti-Virus has least issues?

Had issues running Avast with Windows 8 (Avast is improving compatibility).

Don't want to spend more than $20 (free is preferred). Don't want a nanny bugging me or slowing my system down. But also don't want BSODs or viruses.

Leaning towards Webroot (for $9.99 right now) or AVG. May give Avast a fair shake since .1474 version update. I want something lightweight. Relying on MSE (Windows Defender) right now for maximum compatibility and no false positives but it just failed the most recent AV-Test! 1.5 score! It's a Microsoft Product though so is anyone that surprised? LOL

 

I will say that Norton seems to be trouble free (for me anyway) and Kaspersky seems to have no major issues with Windows 8. Haven't tried any others.

 

Those are both $20 or less? Norton is considered "lightweight" ?

 

Not Avast it isn't good at this moment on windows 8 i use Bitdefender windows 8 securtiy and it works great on windows 8 is also kike Wsa.

 

MSE would likely give you the least problems, as it's built by MS with Windows 8 in mind.

In terms of low performance impact and low false positive rates it's typically the best.

It's weaker in terms of 0day protection so you should pay attention to SmartScreen warnings, which are made for 0day protection. And of course you should use EMET to protect against 0day exploits.

 

They can be had for cheap if you shop around. Try Amazon. Never pay full price for them.

And Norton 2013 is very light.

 

I've read mixed things on EMET and Windows 8 compatibility. I personally am not currently using it because I saw a post from a Microsoft employee in the TechNet forum say not to. I do not have a link to that post.

use the built in windows AV, if you need anything more then you need get some lessons on how to safely use a computer or just go rent porno at your video store

 

As for your requirements, stick with WindowsDefender or Webroot. I'm not saying that others are buggy but you'll hardly get bsod's with the aforementioned.

 

Instead of changing the product:

Not that it is necessary but just to ease your mind - use Windows Defender, rely on all the Microsoft Win 8 built-in security features, learn about security ( www.microsoft.com/protect ) and add:

• Malwarebytes Anti-Malware FREE or PAID
• Hitman Pro FREE or PAID
• Web of Trust (free)
• Norton Safe Web Lite (free)
• Autorun Eater (free)

They are very good, appropriate for home use and for small offices, too.

This way you'll have all the MS tools + other to back you up and to ease your mind that you are better protected

 

Thanks for the info. Ya I sort of figured, MSE is *probably* fine as if you are careful about what files you execute (attachments from unknown senders) that's more than half the battle right there.

I imagine the AV-Test thing is a bit embarrassing for Microsoft so I would expect they would have the resources to through at it to regain certification. Switching or layering is probably just a waste of time, at least for a Windows 8 users trying to avoid O/S compatibility issues.

I think if I did switch I'd lean towards Webroot for the price and footprint, seems to fit my needs buy does it get spyware and adware too? That's what I liked about using ESET for many users than Avast this year. One program and you're done. Seemed like Avast and a few two many filters. Seemed like you could disable all but one or two of them and still have about 99% the same protection as all those other filters loaded.

 

Haven't had problems with Windows 8 on KIS, NIS, WSA, or Avast. G-Data slowed things down a bit...wish I had stayed with Win 7 longer....had to bring the "start" button back to feel comfortable.

i have webroot, nis, kis (kaspersky not kingsoft), eset and had bitdefender win 8 edition all run fine from my testing. and to your question about webroot it has done very well in my testing and with the way it works (i have tested this personally) what it does not stop will be monitored and then removed as soon as its updated to do so and in doing so will remove whats left from the threat and return files back to the way they were. by monitoring a file the changes are recorded and can be reverted even if you decide to tell it to.

but all of the above mentioned will work very well and protect you fine imo.

 

I must say the WD must be the most stable, however, detection rates and features have a lot to be desired.

I tried installing Avast on recently installed Windows 8 on one of my HD, within few secs. it gave me BSOD, afterwards i was unable to pass through bootscreen of both OS (another HD has WinXP installed). Restarted about 20-30 times, Finally was able to log in Win 8, Removed Avast, everything working fine since uninstall, but getting CHKDSK everytime i start windows
For now Relying on PCAV.. No slowdown, no probs.
Does anyone knows how can i run Windows Defender alongside with PCAV
it will be a good combination. In the previous Version PCAV 2.0 - Windows defender doesn't turn off, so i used to get both working fine without any problems. But since i updated to 2.1 Windows defender turns off!!

 

This may have happened because Panda Cloud v2.0 was not compatible with Windows 8 RTM.

 

Yup i know that, but didn't face a single problem running it on Win 8!!

 

I am using Emsisoft in windows 8. No slowdowns, conflicts Only thing is surf protection is not working with IE10 but that doesn't bother me as I am using opera & firefox

 

I had been monitoring Wilder's for some time waiting for a thread like this. I figured maybe everyone was too high tech for Win8!

As always, I imagine problems that the user may think are caused by installation of an anti-virus may often be unique to individual computers. In my limited trials on various computers upgraded to Win8 I have not seen a single BSOD.

Avast! Internet Security - After leaving my laptop running for the day while at work I noticed I would return home to find a black screen as if the laptop had went to sleep. The only way to get it back up was with a forced shut down via the power button and reboot. Hibernation was not enabled and after several days of this removing Avast! eliminated the problem.

Comodo Internet Security - I've installed this on several Win8 computers with no apparent problems.

VIPRE Anti-Virus - I now am back to running this on my personal laptop. No problems at all.

Zemana Antilogger 64-bit - This installed without any problems, but did not appear to be doing anything until a quick recent version update.

Windows Defender - I have run this on several work stations. No apparent problems. I did notice that Defender automatically disables itself upon installation of "any" other anti-virus, including Kingsoft, with no warnings or "complaints" from Defender.

If you upgrade to Win8 and quickly get tired of the "tiles" I really like Start8 by Stardock.

 

BitDefender Windows 8 Security is good at the moment. It is able to take advantage of Windows 8's new ELAM (Early Launch Anti Malware) driver.

No problems at all at the moment although I initially tweaked the firewall to make it work better with other devices on the network.
