So I will be using windows 7 firewall in restricted mode.

What firewall rule must be created for Avira 2013 Premium Anti-virus to function properly?
What firewall rule must be created for MBAM to function properly?
What firewall rule must be created for spybot S&D to function properly?

This is all I'm allowing to run besides Firefox and thunderbird.

In general just http (distant or remote port 80 tcp ) and perhaps https Remote port 443 tcp) should be sufficent for the updating. Thiis is assuming icmp and dns are allowed globally.

    Avira:

    MBAM:

if memory serves me. it is the mbam exe and maybe an additional updater is required.

    Spybot S&D:

probably the same as for MBAM.

However, use the command for creating a log of connections prior to attempted updates and the log should reveal the processes. After you are finished just exit the command (logging will cease).

This netstat will record the connections attempts as per process per second to the home drive ("C:\"):

    netstat -anob -t 1 > c:\netstat1.txt
