Ah yes slow startup is never a good thing. At least you got MBAM on-demand.:thumb:

    I have a DD-WRT hardware firewall
    Sandboxie
Chrome + HTTPS Everywhere / Do Not Track / Adblock / Ghostery
    Avast Free

    I run Malwarebytes - Anti-Malware about one a week

To the best of my knowledge I've never had a problem... would someone mind explaining a benefit I would receive from either changing my setup or adding an additional program?

    Linksys Router with Norton DNS

    Look 'n' Stop Firewall 2.07
    DefenseWall HIPS 3.20

    On-demand (scan once per month):
    HitmanPro
    MBAM

    Backup:
    ShadowProtect Desktop
    SyncToy for data backup

Chrome (built in DNT enabled, no-referrer, geoloc disabled, js disabled globally, no 3rd cookies, http cookies blocked with some exceptions for websites, java disabled globally, internal sandboxed pdf enabled, flash player disabled only PAPI in use, password chrome manager disabled, autofill feature disabled, check for server certificate revocation enabled)
Additionally AdFender with 5 different blocking lists (not the default one) running in background - since it's much lighter for resources than Adblock extension for Chrome.

    Windows 8 Pro 64bit
NAT Router w/ SPI - Isolated without wifi
    OA Premium + EAM
    Appguard on Lockdown
    Sandboxie
Firefox with Lastpass, NoScript, WOT (block all unknown/poorly rated sites), Adblock Plus, Flash is my only plugin.
    Norton DNS

I don’t use any on-demand scanners as I feel the above should provide adequate protection. Excluding the above and my system drivers I only have 2 other applications installed.

Really? How so? Is AdFender also much lighter for resources than AdBlock extension for Firefox? :doubt:

Shadow Defender is a keeper for me. Since I run a very static setup, I really should have given this a try a long time ago.

Not trying to sound like a jerk...but did anyone see my question earlier?

Why do you use the programs that you use and do you truly believe it gives you any additional benefit?

Yes we use them for additional benefit, because we believe in the layer security approach.

I was reffering to Chrome not Firefox.
I don't use Firefox but in Chrome you can check it very easily in "View background pages" where you can check CPU and memory usage.

We use the apps for protection against malware. And of course we believe they give additional benefits. Otherwise we wouldn't use them, duh!

In my opinion, if you haven't had any problems with your current setup and you feel comfortable using what you are using, changing your setup wont do nothing good for you.

My setup for the past two years has been SBIE and NoScript. Since that works perfectly for me, there is no reason to change nothing. You are using SBIE, keep using it along Avast as you are doing now and you ll be OK.

You probably didn't get an answer the first time because it was such a broad question, and as bo elam says, if you aren't having problems why change?

Or maybe you didn't get an answer because the question misses the point of the thread for some of us who like trying different combinations to learn about security or just for the fun of it. In my case it's a challenge to see how little I can use and still feel safe. As you can see in my signature, it takes more than some people. Bo elam's setup is probably enough, especially since he knows what he's doing and what to avoid. I'm working in that direction, it's what has kept my interest for a couple of years here.

If you got into it in the same way (not suggesting you do, if you are happy, why bother?) you might begin wondering about a few things. Such as this recent malware removal test from AV Comparitives (it's a PDF):

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/removal-tests/246-removal-test-november-2012

Avast is at the bottom. It's just one test though so you'd have to look at how it does in other tests. And you could wonder if MBAM's strength is in malware removal. Then you might ask if removal is that important to you if you deal with infections by starting over with a recent system image kept in a secure place. And then you'd be looking into imaging software, comparing them in detail to find what works best for your needs.

But you are using Sandboxie and MBAM and Chrome with some good extensions, all top-notch programs, and aren't having problems. Maybe you are asking the question because you are getting curious about trying different things just to see how they work?

@justenough, Snowden, I do get curious sometimes about trying programs. When that happens, I run the light virtualization program that I am using and install the program that I want to try. Last night I was curious about the new Beta  Malwarebytes Anti rootkit program so I tried it under TimeFreeze. It worked great as my PC passed the test and curiosity got killed.

Dumped WSA. I've tried to get it to work but it doesn't want to play nice. I also had EAM running but it seemed to slow down a few things opening. I might go back to it but I think with all the other stuff I have, I'll be all set.
I installed Kingsoft AV 2012 running in standard monitor.
I also added CyberGhost VPN. I acquired it through some giveaway.
It all seems to be running smoothly.
