I am running NAV 2002 and Zone Alarm (Free Edition) at the moment. I want to change my security to something more sophisticated!

Can anyone advise or recommend me on what I should be using AV scanners and Firewalls etc to reduce my chance of infection or attack.

    Hi,
you could give a try to NOD32 as AV and to LookandStop
(with enhanced ruleset) as firewall :)

Then the virus part is done with NOD, now the trojans and worms. Look in the Diamond Computer systems forums here on the board if you like TDS and WormGuard as an extra to work beside what you have already. Both run good beside NAV and ZA and NOD32.
You could look to other firewalls or the ZA Pro version but there are many others too as you see in the "firewall" forums overhere.
Recently i heard in the press ZAPro would be about the best stopping everything, but several on this board will not always agree, so good to look at the others too, and ZA/ZAPro sometimes needs more configuration then people realize and we would so much like some extra settings possibilities which are not thee to work really nice.
So the firewall will be some item........
NAV is nice, you might like to check out AVP / KAV as one of the real better ones which is for trojans/worms and viruses both.
It's not bad to have several on your system, maybe installed on other partitions, as long as none is set resident or only one which is closed when you scan with one of the others.
TDS and WG you can keep on all time as these don't bite none of the other scanners.
Good that there is written about a lot of experiences here in the forums!

I have Sigate free version for a firewall.I like it.The advice to check other firewall posts is very good advice.Everyone has their favorites, everyone doesn't necessarily want the same performance or features. The more knowledgable users can really tell you how to tweak/set-up a firewall.Firewalls are a personal preferrence I think. The advanced and experienced folks here can tell what is best suited for your needs. It's not an easy choice because there seem to be so many good firewall programs, both free and pay versions.I have an anti-trojan program also, and recommend that you consider getting one. That's the same situation as the firewall. The people here could probably point you to one of the really good ones available.

Enjoy most certainly :) TDS is about the basic of my whole system with WormGuard beside it. Now they have more tools in the build about which we will hear the coming months my advice would be to keep checking them back and add them to your toolbox once they're available.
Important question: which windows version are you running?

Firstly, thanks for all the responses.

I want to spend as little as possible, perhaps a new av scanner and then depending on the cost there firewalls and anti trojans.

Unfortunatley I'm running Win ME so wormguard may or may not work - I've not tried it yet. Will do.
