If anyone uses BufferZone Pro, I'd love to hear your comments - pro and con. How is it on resources and does it slow your system down at all? I'd be using it on an XP SP3 system.

BYW, is it basically just like Sandboxie?

I use on my W7 and it runs great, gives you lots of options.

You have total control over what files stay in the zone or not.......and the program unloads easily to surf normally.

You have to unload it to update the Firefox extensions ,which is normal. :)"

My random restart issue turned out to be hardware based [PSU and Video card] ....although not sure if it was also helped along by the odd virus remmant or two.

If all else fails, including reverting to an earlier image, consider that there may be hardware issues involved....perhaps a good time to upgrade?

    - good luck my friend,

I've installed Bufferzone Pro on two 64-bit computers.

    #1 Windows Vista
Trouble with installation cased by Windows Defender. Restarted before allowing all changes. Once this was resolved it ran smoothly with no noticeable lag, just noticed the fan seems to run longer and more frequently.

Since my change to Sandboxie (Paid), I've been unable to reinstall BZP. Still no progress despite assistance and multiple efforts to clean the uninstall and repair any possible corruption. Other than this, I've had no trouble with BZP. It's relatively simple to set up and for a novice it takes MOST of the effort out the setup. As has been the experience with the next PC.

    #2 Windows Seven
No trouble with installation. Hasn't caused any problems or headache for sibling using the computer. I do regular inspections on the system to make sure everything is being updated, that any errors (none yet) are identified and resolved, and that no detectible infections are present (prior to installation and at present).

The last I tried it caused so much problems I decided never to try it again.

Is Buffer zone still being developed? I like the idea behind BZ, it would be too bad if it simply went away.

At least we now see it's still being developed/supported (and it's still free)! :thumb:

No, not at all,for me at any rate. I heard someone say once it is a merger of SBIE and Defensewall. That is disrespectful to all 3 products for me. Each are in their own way unique. It's SBIE all the way for me but see the merits of the others mentioned.

Anyone know if BZ is Win 8 compatible so I can have another look? My last experience was real slow-down in protected apps launch and general frustration that well...... it wasn't SBIE. My issue not theirs I'm sure.

    Thanks

Chris, in what major way(s) do you find BZ different than SBIE?

    Hi Cruise,

In retrospect the use if the words 'not at all' was not appropriate. At the core they perform a similar function of redirecting traffic from threat gate apps to a restricted 'virtual' space.

My issues with BZ were around the way it did that. As stated that maybe just me and because I am a long time SBIE user I am just unable to accept different approaches.

Going on memory ( it was a while ago) the key differences were around speed of applications running in BZ, lack of granularity in setting restrictions/exceptions with BZ, a single virtual space rather than multiple sandboxes you can have with SBIE and some unexpected consequences of both running apps in and emptying the bufferzone. For example when I emptied the bufferzone I found FF certain add-ons that existed before BZ was installed would also be deleted as would all my Roboform password data. I assume that was because as they were updated the whole folder was copied into the virtual container and dumped from the real system.

No doubt I could have spent some time resolving this stuff but as I had a solid and consistent SBIE set-up to fall back on I did not think it was worth the effort. Maybe if it was a bit more responsive I'd have stuck with it a while longer, but as noted it was slow for me. That I'm afraid is the cardinal sin for software in my view.

    Cheers

Last time I tried (sometime in last spring...),
    BZ Pro was buggy...

Hi Cruise, I think Sandboxie is more convenient. For one, I know you can not save Favorites/Bookmarks in Buffer Zone but is easily done in SBIE.

Hmm, BZ sounds tempting so I'll give it a try (but I believe I'll backup first)... :p
