It's been a long time since I played with AVs much. I'm looking for something FREE that I can install and run on-demand only, nothing resident. I have MBAM now, but I'm wondering if there are any AVs that will do this anymore. I know there used to be an older BitDefender you could install on-demand only. Any ideas?

If not, what are the best free on-demand scanners like MBAM?

I'm on Win 7 x64 if it matters....

HitmanPro says unlimited free scanning and free 30 day trial. Can I install it as a free scanner only, and skip the 30 day trial?

Thanks for all the suggestions also....

You only need to start the trial with HitmanPro if you choose to have any detected malware removed from the computer using HitmanPro. It will delete tracking cookies free without needing a trial. It works well as a free on-demand scanner.

I'd normally scan with MalwareBytes if HitmanPro detect's something.

I believe the Eset online scanner has a desktop on demand version if you visit the site using Chrome, not sure about firefox.

I recommend Emsisoft Antimalware free, MBAM free and HitmanPro. :)

also add to the list, Ultra Virus Killer.
uses other engines, dont remember which but its a very handy utility when it comes to cleaning machines.

also kaspersky has a free cleaning/scanner tools and these are all offline scanners. if you wanna know the online free scanners, well the list will be BIG.

Emsisoft's Emergency Kit, maybe scan speed is on the low side...

AFAIK, it's the same engine, so the scan speed should be the same?
EEK has no service running when it's closed so it has the least impact on the system performance.

I believe the scan speed in EAM free is much faster than EEK. Also EEK is meant to clean a pc and be used as a portable scanner. If the OP asks for something similar to MBAM free, EAM is the perfect choice. :)

Thanks again for all the additional suggestions... I will see if I can try some more. So far I am using MBAM and Hitman Pro and like both.
