"unknown network error" on large downloads on the 5th version of Eset Sec

Every time when I download larger files (over 100 MB) around 110-140 I got a "unknown network error" and all the d/l's stops. I tried Chrome, IE and Firefox to same result. Only after disabling the firewall, the d/l's were able to complete succesfully. I reverted to the version 4 and the behaviour persists. I previously used previous version for years with no problem.

As soon as I disable the firewall from ESET all works well. The lame firewall from Windows doesn't produce the problem either, only ESET.

Anyone knows about a quickfix of this issue ?

Someone suggested on a different generic forum something along "Upon careful investigation, it was found that the anti-virus's HTTP checking (port checking) option was responsible. Disabling this option permanently fixes the network error thing. Since only HTTP/Port-checking is disabled the anti-virus should still work normally" but I wouldn't know how to do the same with ESET.

PS As my luck goes, I just paid for another 2 years of updates, just before the annoying issue showed up.

 

Does the issue occur if you limit the firewall to protocol filtering only in the firewall integration setup?

 

Mostly, I use the default setup of the application, only changed it to Interactive Mode. I checked the option you mentioned (never touched that one) and I'll give it a try tonight. Since the error consistently appear after 1...2 hours in the download process, it's not that easy to test on the fly.

I reversed to version 4 of the ESET Security so the options in the setup menu have slightly changed names, though. I assume you mean instead of "All Features Active" to use "Only Scan Application Protocols", right ?

OK Marcos, I give it a number of tries this weekend and appears that switching to "protocol filtering only" allows uninterrupted d/l's. How much of a compromise is that move, in terms of security ? Just curios.

Anyhow, thanks for your help, I believe i'll stay with version 4 till kingdom come, the newer version gave me only headaches.

Look like I was a little premature in celebrating. The general stop in downloads reappeared. Switching to 'protocol filtering only' seemed to work but not anymore. Time to disable the firewall again.

 

If the issue is not caused by firewall, try uninstalling the Windows Update 2735855 as suggested here.

 

Well, that's the problem. As soon as I disable (completely OFF) the ESET Firewall, the downloads go w/o problems. It only started last week when I upgraded to 5th version.

I checked for that sec patch, KB2735855 in the list, it was installed on 12 september 2012 but the problems started only last week, after the upgrade, not after the patch was installed.

Mostly annoying is that even reverting to 4th version of the app doesn't solve the problem.

 

Please confirm that uninstalling the update 2735855 doesn't make any difference.
