what is the difference between this and the Emsisoft Anti Malware at "Freeware" Mode?

EEK and HitmanPro are my favourite on demand scanners. Good work Emsisoft!

 

Just a reminder, if you are already using 2.0, then you can update to 3.0 via the onboard update.

 

Does it have the ability to update the viryus database or we have to manually download a new one everytime we want to scan something?

 

Launch the scanner UI, and there is an update button that you need to select each time before you scan. The update takes about 60-90sec for me, but today it took about 12min because it updated to version 3.0. There is a nice progress menu that shows what it is downloading and when it's done.

 

EEK is compleat useless software in my opinion.
Complete scanner needs 40 minute on my SSD, I can't immagine on normal HD
Roboscan Complete scan (with the same Bitdefender engine) 10 minutes
HitmanPro scan is only 9 seconds

Emsi need realy redesign all EEK program, is a 1980' program used in the 2010 years, simply not aceptable.

 

EEK is plenty fast for me. There was a significant increase in scan speeds going from Version 1.X to Version 2.X.

 

If you think HMP and EEK scan equal material, you are mistaken. Yes HMP is a nice scanner that can be used daily because of it's lightning quick behavioral scanning, but EEK will scan your entire machine, and that is also advantageous when done once or twice per month........Hardly useless.

intent was compared some different scanning:
complete scanning Roboscan 10 min. Vs EEK 40 min = EEK looser and Roboscan use the same engine too
fast scanning only registry parts HMP 9 seconds Vs EEK 5 minutes : EEK looser

I have used EEK 2 in some case to see if there was viruses remaining trace in friends pcs and the solution was : starting eek at the evening, let your pc all the night processing, call me tomorrow telling me what EEK is saying at the end of the scan. This is ridiculous, simply ridiculous compared to other solutions with the same skill and even with the same engine

 

Well since you put an extremely high emphasis on speed, then you're better off with HMP. For me, speed is the least thing that I emphasize, but even if I did care about scan speed, on all 3 of my machines, a Deep Scan with EEK is only marginally longer than a Full Scan with MBAM. They both complete in just under 40min.

 

EEK and HitmanPro are totally different products. Yes both are anti-malwares, but HMP uses the cloud for scanning, only does a default scan rather than being able to do a deep/full scan, and won't remove for free. EEK doesn't scan in the cloud, can do a deep scan, and will remove for free, but it scans slower than molasses.

IMO both are great products.

 

EEK 3.0 allows me to choose the number of processors to use (1 to 4) along with the number of threads (1 to 8 ) and seven levels of scan thread priority (idle to time critical).

I imagine this will help improve the scan times, but I can't be bothered doing any comparisons - I've just set everything to max!

 

What does the advanced caching do? If I only intend the scan a PC once, would it be faster to turn caching off?

 

Probably . . . Who knows but i'm sure it wouldn't speed it up a single bit if your'e only scanning once hahahahaha

Well based on my tests if your PC is powerful enough the main bottleneck would be HDD so there would be no benefit in turning off the caching feature.

 

On my system with a OCZ Vertex 4 with roughly 200 GB of data a full scan takes less then 5 minutes. So the scan speed you are experiencing is definitely not normal. Would you mind sharing your system specs and a list of software running in the background while performing the scan?

If you want an Emisoft scanner that scans in a couple mins try Emsisoft MalAware.
BTW, i think this programs have not been updated since a long time ago. Look at the last revision date. Version 1.0.0.4 - 12/15/2009

It is still being updated hourly. The software itself hasn't changed because there is nothing to change really as all actual rules and signatures are located in the cloud.

 

Romagnolo1973 seems to be comparing EEK more directly with Roboscan.

 

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool takes ~3 hours to finish a scan. That's slow.
