It does not matter where you have Windows installed because at boot it is virtually switched to C:\ for compatibility. If no file was copied in the destination folder it means there is something on your system which prevented the installer to do it's job. You can see all the errors that appear in WFC if you go to Event Viewer. There is a category named Applications and Logs which contains a subcategory named WFC. Here are stored all errors regarding WFC. In your case, it seems that Windows Registry was updated. It says that you already have WFC installed because the registry key about installation was saved. To remove the program from Windows Registry you must delete the following key:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Windows Firewall Control]

    1. Do you have any Windows services disabled by you on purpose ?
    2. Do you have any security application which may prevent WFC from manipulating and executing files on your computer ?
    3. .NET Framework 4.0 is required to run newer versions of WFC. Without it, WFC does not start.

Only mentioned that because I do have it installed into a non-standard location. (And I have run across programs that do not behave correctly when they are installed into unexpected locations.)

    > 1. Do you have any Windows services disabled by you on purpose ?

    No.

    > 2. Do you have any security application which may prevent WFC

I have Malwarebytes Anti-malware, but it was not running at the time of my attempted install.

    > 3. .NET Framework 4.0 is required to run newer versions of WFC

I'll assume it will not even install successfully without it, much less run?

I'll have to check further this evening when I'm at my Win7 computer.

    > There is a category named Applications and Logs which contains a subcategory named WFC

    True.

    > Here are stored all errors regarding WFC

Except that there is nothing there. "Number of events: 0".

    > It says that you already have WFC installed because the registry key about installation was saved

    True.

    > To remove the program from Windows Registry you must delete the following key

    Thanks :).

This means that Windows Firewall Control Service (wfcs.exe) is not running.

    1. If you run "services.msc", in the list of Windows services how Windows Firewall Control service appear ? It should be set to Automatic and running. Please check if the service is not set to Disabled. The problem that you have is that wfc.exe can't connect properly to wfcs.exe. This usually happens when the service (wfcs.exe) is not running.
    2. If you go in the Event Viewer, under the category "Applications and Services Logs" you will see a subcategory named WFC. There are stored any errors logged by WFC. If the log is not empty, please use the button on the right named "Save all events as..." to export this log to an *.evtx file. Please send this file to support@binisoft.org to check it.
    3. Go to the installation folder and check if there are 2 files: wfc.exe (GUI) and wfcs.exe (Windows service).
    4. During the installation everything went normal ? WFC setup window should close itself and the application should appear in the system tray.
    5. Try to uninstall WFC from Programs and Features from Control Panel and reinstall the latest version from scratch. Restart is not required. After a fresh install does this problem persist ?

Please let me know if this was helpful for you.

This just happened. I've restored default rules earlier. I just visited one site that needs Java..

Why twice? Protocol is any on both...

I've Medium Filtering, High notifications & Outbound rules.

Do you use version 3.7.0.4 ? When the notification popup displayed did you press to allow it just once and it created 2 identical rules ? You can delete one rule from the both. I will check this scenario to find the problem. Thank you for reporting this.

Nice, since it's my start of semestral break, I can test this feature.
This should be a feature that can be enable or disable.

Yes. I've latest version. And I allowed it once and after a while again... so 2 identical rules!

And now rules won't work, I just allowed messenger and it cannot connect! If I set Profil to Low Filtering, it connects... so please fix this.:D

Hmmm, try logging off and login again on the computer. See if that by any chance fixes the situation. Could be some other program you have installed and running that interferes with this software.

Avast Webshield is incompatible with Windows Firewall because it is a software proxy and all network traffic is redirected through Avast WebShield instead of Windows Firewall. In this case no matter rule you create using WFC or not, they will be ignored. Try to deactivate the WebShield and see if the rules that you have defined in Windows Firewall work again.

    Version 3.7.0.5 released

    What's new:
    - New: Options tab contains now a new checkbox which when it is enabled prevents other programs from creating new rules in Windows Firewall. In case of installing of a new program which wants to add a new firewall exception, just uncheck this option from WFC and the external setup can create a new rule, otherwise the rule will be deleted automatically by WFC.
    - New: Right click on the tray icon will open a context menu from where the user can choose to open the Main Window, Manage Rules window or to Exit the application. The Exit button from the Main Window was removed. The only way to exit the application is the Exit menu item from the context menu.
    - Fixed: The program crashes if the user chooses Cancel on the UAC message box.
    - Fixed: If any dependant Windows service is stopped or set to disabled, it will be started automatically at start-up of the GUI (wfc.exe). The dependant services are: Windows Firewall Control, Windows Firewall and DNS Cache for the notifications.
    - Fixed: Main window can be opened multiple times if the user clicks multiple times very fast on the system tray icon of the application.
    - Fixed: Browse to block button from the main window does not support *.bin or *.setup files.

    Download location: http://binisoft.org/download/wfc.exe
    MD5: 722f3b5dfce83fcecc8e651b9bbe65e1

    Other things:
This version should also resolve the problem that some of you had with the previous version when the program opens but can't connect to the Windows service and displays that yellow icon with an exclamation mark on it.

Your feedback is welcome. Please let me know if the reported problems were fixed and if you like the new changes. Any other problems will be fixed in the next release.

    Thank you for your support,
    Alexandru

Pretty bad when you have to disable a component of avast to be secure.
I just hope malware authors do not employ the same proxy techniques to bypass firewalls.:ninja:

    Works great !!! :thumb: :thumb:

But 1 minor (very minor) thing. Maybe I'm nitpicking here :)-[ ) but the new Option "Disable the programs ability to add firewall exceptions" could better read something like "Disable other programs ability ..."

    Sorry for nitpicking

    Other wise :thumb: :thumb:

So I gave TinyWall a run. Might have been worth a continued look, but I was running into troubles with TW when using Windows Fast User Switching.

So been giving this more thought & figured I might as well see just what version of .NET I have. KB318785 points you to the Registry (well that's efficient!) & that gives me clues that I may actually have 4.0 installed. (I had thought at one time I did install it, for one particular program, but that did not work out, so uninstalled it, but perhaps not?) And the Registry pointed to this location, E:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319, & sure enough there is some odd 400 MB of junk in there (plus another 100 MB between the v2.0 & v3.0 & v3.5 directories).

And if that is the case, then I should have been able to install, successfully, which was not the case. So wonder what the real problem was?

I'll try tomorrow with this latest update & see what goes.

    v3.7.0.5

Ah well, no sense in waiting.

Downloaded, verified the hash, ran the installer.
    And the very same thing.
I choose the exact same setup selections, & the exact same thing happened as described on the page before.

    So I'm open to ideas?

Oh, I did rename wfc.exe to 'wfc_3705 (windows firewall control).exe' before running it, should that matter? (I always rename my downloads to something meaningful.)
