I will never understand how these financial markets work. Why a drop of value of these shares because the profits dropped compared with the same period of last year is beyond my understanding. Specially when it comes to Google, a company which doesn't show any bad signs for the future.

The issue here is not so much the drop (they earned more, but less than they'd hoped) but that this drop came with no statement. There was no one there to say "Here's what happened, here's how we plan to fix it".

The market is very emotional - people get afraid easily and they take opportunities when they can. When something like this happens and there's no one there to reassure them that things will turn around and explain the issues they get scared and the stock takes a huge hit because of it.

any drop in profits is a bad sign for the future, But I do wonder how much of the drop in share price & profits was deliberately manipulated by Google so the books look worse & lower amounts of cash to pay teh multi-billion$$ fines that teh EU are considering imposing on it
They want to fine Google 10% of profits
if lower shares, & lower profits then consequently lower fines

Hungry explained it best really. When you're dealing with paranoid people (the majority of stockholders) and millions or billions of dollars, now matters a heck of a lot more than future. Google isn't untouchable, bad things can happen no matter what the predicted outlook is like.
