The way I do it myself, I usually don't do any scan of those files. If it is a video, the video is always run under Sandboxie till the day that it gets deleted from my computer. If it is a (well known) program that I am going to try, I install it under TimeFreeze and never get the installer from anywhere else but the developers site or File Hippo. I can do it like this because its been a long time since I installed something new in my XP. In my W7, I have installed the same programs that I have in XP.

    Take a look at http://distrowatch.com/
Ton's of distro's. My favs are ubuntu, mint, arch and PClinuxOS. Those are just a few. Ubuntu is probably the more popular one. You can literally try about 20 of them. I usually dual boot one distro with windows 7. That way I can boot into linux if I'm on the road or at a open wifi spot.

I have never tried Virus Total, BUT, I have run online scans with every antivirus that provides an online scan, and time and time again, Avast catches just about everything, just recently installed Sandboxie (yes, I know it has been around for a while), AND ExploitShield 0.7.....now, theoretically, I should not need to run VirusTotal....

I changed my setup this way:

    - elevated from Standard user to Administrator.
    - UAC is set to max
    - SRP is enabled for all users (including administrator)

I believe I have similar protection level as before and I don't have to enter my password whenever I need to elevate my privileges.

I use admin too, I find it a hassle to type the pw every time.

OT: Avast removed temporarily to test out new version of Kingsoft. Liking it so far.

He is fortunate in that people miss him when he doesn't show up for a few days. That is probably not the case for us all.

Still using Sandboxie and some other stuff. ;)

    Good Evening Securon !

Me too I try the duo ESS5 + WSA complet, work like a charm ! and also, I setup the ESS firewall on automatic and let the outbound firewall control task to WSA, my old computer run faster !!!:D

  21. I don't need to upload anything if VT has results, but of course I trust the places I download files from, never really download "large" files.

Got rid of Zemana free. Doesn't have enough protection I guess and I have plenty already.

Changed Comodo D+ to Paranoid Mode, and treat untrusted as Blocked. My setup is so static, I'm never adding things to it anymore, so figured why not. Could stop drive bys if I allow a bad script, not that it would matter sandboxed, but hey...

Also tweaked a few more GP settings, for the same reason. I found settings that allow you to filter file types you download, either whitelisting or blacklisting. I blacklisted many executable file types. Also disabled Windows Installer. Will manual/start it when needed.

I'm always, all this time later even finding new things I can do here or there to harden XP Pro. Just a couple weeks ago I found out how to turn DEP always on. It never really occurred to me before.

I doubt my sig will ever change as long as I'm on XP. Box is so light & stable. And always a closed browser or reboot away from a pristine state again even if I slip up.
