From my understanding of the terminology, I've been hijacked again. I can't access anything in Explorer, no doc's, no programs, nothing. IE works, but the "blank" default home page is no longer blank. There's a listing of websearch topics, but no company name.
Spybot didn't detect anything, neither did PC-cillin 7.100/1.925.00. I managed to access hijackthis via Start/Find/... and the log is shown below.
Help, please - I'm well and truly cornered.
    Thanks,
    / H

PS, other functions are not accessible either, eg I can't get Win 98 Control Panel or the printer maintenance (for cleaning ink heads).

PPS, problem solved - turned out to be a trojan called CWS.Smartsearch.2. CWShredder15901 managed to delete the trojan at 3rd attempt. Don't know how it got into my PC, but it's gone now (thanks to your general info section).

    Hi Hans 01,

There's a few more items there that should be removed/fixed.

First, create a permanent folder for it on your hard drive (example: C:\HJT\ ) and put Hijackthis into that permanent folder. Hijackthis creates backups in the folder it is ran from, so you want to have them in one place in case you need to restore anything you removed accidently.

Next, try and remove the FWN Toolbar through the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Look for "FindWhateverNow" and uninstall it.
For more information on the "FWN Toolbar" and why it is recommended to uninstall it, see here: http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/library/findwhatevernow/index.phtml

In HijackThis, place a check beside the following items.
Close ALL browsers and any open programs/windows, except HijackThis, and click *Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank

    O1 - Hosts: 217.116.231.7 aimtoday.aol.com
    O1 - Hosts: 217.116.231.7 aimtoday.aol.com

    O3 - Toolbar: FWN Toolbar - {3D0BDAB3-12F4-471C-8966-E35A2C6C7DE7} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FWNTOOLBAR.DLL

(this one is optional to fix but it is a resource hog, and not needed to start up with your computer)
    O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

(If you didn't put this in your trusted zone, or want to keep it there, then fix this too. Only put sites in the trusted zone that you absolutely trust not to do anything malicious)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://chat.msn.com

Next, download the free version of Ad-Aware6 build 6.181, install it, and bring it up-todate by clicking on the program's webupdate (the globe icon), then click the "connect" button to download the most recent Reference-file. Follow these instructions for setting up Ad-Aware for a full scan:
How To Perform a "Full Scan" with Ad-Aware6.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load.

Scan with CWShredder while in safe mode. Press the *Fix button (not the scan button) and follow the instructions you will receive when the program runs.

While still in safe mode, scan with Ad-Aware6 and fix what it finds.

    Empty your Temp folders.

Empty IE's Temporary Internet Files: Open Internet Explorer - >Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Now click the "Delete Cookies" button and click OK.

Reboot your computer back into normal mode.

Panda Antivirus On-Line scan is able to remove some variants of the CWS Start-Page hijacker (sp.html) that was previously shown in your first log, so I would suggestion that you do an online scan there too: Panda Antivirus On-Line Scan

Then go to Microsoft's Update Site and download and install ALL Critical Updates listed for IE6. You are missing the Service Pack 1 which will help protect you.

Post a new log here so we can check it.

    Regards,

    snap
