I think I'd have to go with Pidgin Messenger. It allows me to KIT with friends abroad. And, for some relevance here, plugins like OTR & Pidgin-Encryption add great security to it.

I've got quite a few to list but decided that most of these are known here and would probably be listed here anyway as someone else's 'must-have'...

So, I paused for a while, looked at the programs I have and it didn't take me long to figure out which.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband is the one, at least for now. Without this (not taking into account other means of getting wireless access), I can't connect to the web. It's not a favorite per-se but a 'must-have' at least for me on this laptop of mine.

Avant Browser. I used to switch between Avant / Orca and Maxthon.

However after a Maxthon update caused me to lose my customized configuration I ditched it immediately.

With Avant, I can install it on any PC, and login to my Avant account and it downloads all my favorites and my configuration settings. This is a big plus for me - I configured Avant to work the way I want some time ago, and now any computer I install it on will use the same configuration.

I've never liked Firefox or Chrome.

There are many "mush-have" for me, but I'd say Sandboxie is NO.1 on this list.

I should add Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as well, I install that on all my PCs. However there are no other security applications I would include.

VLC Media player: has a great support for video codecs, so no need to install codec packs to be able to watch a video, ability to play music, video's who are located in a local netwerk or on a NAS.

Mediamonkey: This is also very good good tool for identifying tracks automatically, it's als a very good multimedia organizer tool, very good tagger, sharing of multimedia collection with DLNA certified devices.

inSSIDER : This is a very good to help determine what is the best place to place your wireless router/AP, also to be able to see on which channel other wireless devices are broadcasting.

7zip: Great tool for extracting compressed files. This tool has also a High compression ratio when you use 7z format in comparison with other archivers.

AutoHotkey: Used to create shortcuts and hotkeys, but can do much, much more. Takes some time to learn though.

Vista Start Menu: Better than Windows XP or 7 regular start menu.

SideSlide: If you have too many shortcuts on desktop, then this is a nice solution. Creates a hidden window on the side or top of screen that slides into view when you put mouse onto the edge.

KO Approach: Adds mouse functionality - long-click on folder opens a quick-navigation view or quick view of contents. Nice convenience.

FileMenu Tools: Adds right-click menu functions to mouse that I use all the time.

Other everyday basics: Firefox for browser, Thuderbird for email, Internet Download Manager for faster downloading, Keepass for passwords (KeeFox plugin is a must for firefox users), Skype for VoIP calls, WinRAR and ExtractNow for archives, and of course firewall, av (CIS currently), and KeyScrambler.

The Internet itself is my addiction therefore Chrome plays a great role with it.

    1. TotalCommander
(Best spent money ever, being for many, many years in LOVE with TC! *puppy*)

    2. Website-Watcher
(Very useful to me "watching" for example epguides-site, searching for new air-dates (yellow marked) of tv-series episodes.)

    3. Grabit
(Okay, or any other .nzb downloader that works of course.)

    4. Local Website Archive
(Whenever I see an interesting article online I preserve it, mostly never reading that stuff again, sure. But at least I could. :D)

    5. ProcessLasso
(Powerful and unique tool, I like the frequent updates and playing around with new features, optimizing my system even more etc. ..)

If I have all of those (and some not mentioned security tools, after all I am a wilders paranoid too :D), fast and trouble-free internet- and usenet-service I am (more than) happy. :)

But since you seem to have asked for only ONE must-have:

=> without TotalCommander (or internet) I wouldn't want to be incarnated at all, honestly! :D

And btw I really HATE the word "app"! :thumbd:
It's called and will always be called" programs" or "software" on my PC! :D

And just in case you will ask tomorrow for 'must-have' hardware:
I do already today vote for SSD!!! :thumb:

    Precisely my view, Osaban.
It's a favorite program I never leave alone and keep returning to. ;)

CCleaner - I just can not imagine any PC without it, as well as Explorer++ or Chrome & Keepass. Support: CleanMem, Defraggler, Ainvo Registry Defrag. The rest is user based.

    Nice progs!

As for me, 'must-have' apps are:
    1. MS office - for work, can't do without PowerPoint and Word,
    2. Any Time Machine ( Sysrestore or Comodo's - they are free and good enough, or Eaz-fix or Rollback RX - though they are paid but much better). A Time Machine helps to play safely with progs and windows.
    3. Any cold imaging app - now I use Clonezilla :thumb: . Cold just not to bloat RAM.
    4. Any archiver - I use now HaoZip, but others are ok as well: WinRar, WinZip, Hamster, 7-zip.

As for browsers, cleaners, defraggers, tuners, avs, various security apps - there are a lot of really great apps but for me they are not so irreplaceable

In a similar vein here, except Xplorer2.
Hands down the most used app on my machines.
