Thank you, Roger_m for your well grounded answer. :thumb:
    I got your point.

So you recommend Vit Registry Fix. I'll try it.

Can you recommend some other free utilities which you tested? Or maybe no need in these cleaners and defragers to run Windows ok?

    Thank you

Where does this 99% come from? Experience? So what your saying is that just about every registry cleaner out there is garbage? Lol

Actually i would tend to agree with roger on this. The large majority of registry cleaners are indeed garbage.
There is no noticeable advantage to using one and the risks are far too high for regular use.I would even go so far as to say that they are rogues in some respect.
Pure junk software like this should be avoided at all costs if you value your computers health. :ninja:

Sorry but I beg to differ. I have tried everything I listed. If you doubt what it lists then just simply uncheck those selections. Do you always remove a legit file that your av says is malicious? No. Do you always block legit programs that your HIPS questions? No. Same thing. I use CCleaner registry all the time after uninstalling a program. Works perfect and never an issue.

Then it's better just don't do cleaning and defragging of disk and registry?

I use ccleaner and defraggler then i call it a day.
If the computer ever gets into a state where it is unusable then i would just restore back to an earlier image.:thumb:

    @Aventador

Are you really surprised at that sort of view? Some people fiddle with their systems more than others and things do go wrong. Personally I have tried many Registry cleaner and I have NOT HAD ONE cause me a problem so far.

I guess that some people are just unlucky...and assume that the same is the case for all of us. :(

Best to make a full image back up and then try for oneself...re. those cleaners that have what is considered to be a 'reasonable' reputation. ;)

Exactly Baldrick. This is what happens. People download and install registry cleaner A for example. It finds 300 invalid entries so they click "fix" to repair them. The next day or days later they get sort of error. So now they blame that program. But did they bother to take precautionary measures before? Do you go 20K without changing your oil then call the car a piece of junk cause the motor blew?

    "Dont shoot the messenger".

Am not disagreeing but rather expressing surprise that you are surprised by that particular bandwagon...that seems to 'roll into town' periodically...often with the same passengers as before...smash up the bar...and then roll out again, etc.

I suppose it is one aspect of these forums...just wish the wagon would loose a wheel on the outskirts of town more often...

Definately. I agree with the rogue tag too for many registry cleaners, due to the following typical scenario. Most registry cleaners which you have to pay for come with a crippled trial version which will remove either none, or very few of the found errors until you purchase them. The publisher usually states grabage on their web site saying how dangerous registry errors are, and how much faster and error free your computer will after cleaning the registry. So people are folled into buying the registry cleaner - it finds 100s of "errors" so they feel the need to buy it. They only find out after cleaning the registry that they have been fooled. Also, because registry errors are made out to be so serious, even if there are no obvious benefits gained for cleaning the registry (so cleaning the registry was probably a waste of time), there is the perceived benefit of cleaning all those errors.

Years of experience, and yes just about every registry cleaner is garabage. No matter how good the publishers claim it is, no matter how well it does in reviews, no matter how many people recommend it and say it is safe.

To prove my claims, all you have to do is run a scan with any registry cleaner, and then go through and look at the file references amongs the found errors. Almost always you will find at least a few (sometimes many) references to files which are still on your harddrive, and therefore the registry key should not be removedas it is not an error.

In all honesty, almost always, cleaning the registry will not provide any benefit. The vast majority of error messages and crashes will never be fixed by a registry cleaner. Also, having lots of errors will usually not have any noticable impact on system performance.

A good example of this, is that once I cleaned around 10,000 errors (yes, ten thousand) errors from the registry using multiple registry cleaners (I install and uninstall new software just about every day, and rarely do a reinstall of Windows), and then did a registry defrag. Afterwards, I did not notice even the slightest difference in my computers performance.

However, if you are looking for free registry cleaners that are safe to use, I suggest the following:

Vit Registry Fix (disable deep scan)
Auslogics Registry Cleaner (it is safe to enable everything except the search for empty software keys)
CCleaner (disable search for obsolete software)

Every other free registry cleaner I've used has had problems with false positives.

Me neither, but I'm sure that mose people who use registry cleaners, just click on the clean or fix button without checking the results first. Also, with a well written registry cleaner you don't have to check the results first as it smart enough to not give false positives.

That is because CCleaner does have problems with false positives, i.e. it the errors it finds are safe to remove. The search for empty software keys can give problems, but all the other areas scanned are safe.

Hi, sorry to hear you're having these problems

Have you tried running trim.bat? (located here

Place it in your CCleaner directory alongside winapp2.ini, run it and follow the instructions. It will trim the full winapp2.ini file down to entries that are relevant to your computer (usually only tens of KiB, compared to the full 270KiB of the development file / the 250 of the release file)

You should see a marked increase in the speed of CCleaner, both launching and running.

    Regards,
    Robert Ward

Well so much for that advice. CCleaner did not open slower as before with CCenhancer. But clicking on the "applications" tab showed a blank area for 3 seconds. Then it appears. Closed it out. Same thing. So its a no go winapp2ini.

Ccleaner will take slightly longer to populate the Applications list once you have added winapp2.ini as it has to check against your system to make sure it doesn't show irrelevant entries. That being said, it should be much less time than the untrimmed file, due to the fact you're only checking entries that will return a positive.
