I hope this doesn't sound too stupid but can anyone answer this question for me? If I have a password storing program, such as Gator, installed to remember all of my passwords on various sites and I install Spywareblaster, will it block Gator from opening? Please email me if you know the answer. Thanks for your help. ~snip~ @aol. com

    Hi and welcome to Wilders,

Sorry I can't help with the technical part of your question, but two comments/suggestions till a "real" answer comes along.

Firstly, never post your email addy in the open, at least not in standard hot-linkable format -- there's harvesters all over the web that'll pick it up for not-so-pleasant purposes. I'm sure one of the mods will alter or delete it as soon as it's noticed, if they haven't already by the time I get this posted.

Second, I think the experts here will all agree to stay away from Gator and find yourself a "clean" alternative for saving passwords etc. Gator is a notorious carrier of all kinds of spyware, that's why it's "blacklisted" by SB and many other security programs.

    Best,
    Mike

Gator is a nasty program/company that is known for spyware. This is why Spywareblaster doesn't play nice with gator. Companies like Gator are the reason you installed anitispyware in the first place. Get rid of it and find an alternate.

I've never used it but I have always heard people recommend RoboForm as a replacement for Gator.

If you decide to use RoboForm, Don't uninstall Gator yet. When you install RoboForm it will ask you if you want to import your data from Gator.

I don't have a lot of intelligent stuff to say here, but after cleaning many MANY friends and relatives PCs of "gator," I will make the following official Detoxian statement....

    "I BARF on Gator/Claria."

If this Gator program runs off an ActiveX control it WILL be blocked by SWB. Also, if you use IE, you do know about IE's Autocomplete feature right? Tools menu, Internet Options, Content tab and Autocomplete button. One might argue that IE isn't the safest place to store passwords but then again, you were using Gator... lol.

    Oh hey Detox! Funny statement!

If it is possible to search the Wall Street Journal indexes, I have never done so, you will find an article about Gator being sued three times  for what they do to people's systems. Appeared about a year ago??

Why do you need software to remember the passwords to sites you visit? Windows XP will do this for you if you let it (unless the site blocks it, e.g. my bank sites require me to type the password in each time). Another way is to put the info in a text file, or send yourself an email, then you can easily retrieve it when you need it.

Also, at most sites requiring sign in, when you do so, a cookie with the info is put in your cookies folder; keep those cookies and on most sites (e.g.. this one), you are automatically logged in next time.

Why you ask? Because from what I've experienced, Windows is riddled with security vunerabilities. I'm not sure where (or how) Windows stores passwords (inside a cookie?), but I want to know my passwords are in a secure place. RoboForm encrypts data using 3DES, which is VERY strong.

This is interesting info about RoboForm. :) My sister recently installed MyIE2 (alternate browser using IE's shell) on her laptop, and upon installation it asked her if she wanted to install RoboForm as well. I understand it should work similarly to Opera's Magic Wand?

Personally I've never used any tool of this kind, as I prefer not to keep any confidential info on the PC - not just because of the security vulnerabilities, but also because nothing is more reliable than a little post-it note in case of PC disaster. :p

    BS :)
