What is a free way of doing this? I already have the product key code from the bottom of the netbook for when it asks me for it.

Netbooks are a disposable laptop. Keep in mind most notebooks have a recovery partition built in also. Most notebooks I get in for repairs I just toss them out. Does your netbook have Windows 7 Starter?

In that case your SOL. You cannot use a Windows 7 starter key for a Windows 7 Home install. But as I said most netbooks have a recovery partition built in. If your worried about backing up then just image the netbook onto an external HDD.

If you still need to install Windows 7 Starter, you can use ei.cfg Removal Utility.

    http://www.zhacks.com/remove-ei-cfg-file-to-create-windows-7-universal-installation-dvd/

It removes from a Windows 7 ISO file, the ei.cfg file which specifies which Windows version will be installed. A Windows 7 ISO file can be legally downloaded for free from Digtal River if you don't have one. With the ei.cfg file missing you will be able to select what edition of Windows you want to install, including Windows 7 Starter, when you bootup from the Windows 7 USB/DVD.
