Your first Anti-Virus

F-Prot on DOS or McAfee VirusScan. I used them both in the early days but can't remember which I installed first. It was on a 486DX33 running Windows 3.1 Suppose it was around 1993 as I remember getting it to play Doom on it. A couple of months later I upgraded the processor with a blisteringly fast DX2-66!!!

I used that too. A shame it was so shortlived.

 

My first AV was Norton Antivirus on Windows 98 SE

I think I used to own a 486DX2-66mhz, but I was too young to remember the AV installed there. Then after that, a Pentium MMX 200 mhz (OCed to 262 mhz!) -- I think I installed McAfee VirusScan there and had Conseal Firewall.

 

Avira was my first!

 

In 1998 I bought my first PC a Micron Millennium Max with a Pentium II 450 processor, 256 MB of PC 133 SDRAM and a 13 GB hard drive which was so big I couldn't possibly ever use all that space. The AV I bought for it was DialogueScience Dr Web for Win98 v4.02b. I still have the original sales order.

Kaspersky 5.0, back then it was worth it, today I wouldnt go near Kaspersky if my life depended on it, I'd use someone elses

 

avg free was my first av it found tons of viruses too

Microsoft Anti-Virus in MS-DOS 6.00...

 

It was way back in 1994...my first AV was Thunderbyte AV (TBAV) on a IBM PC AT

 

Dr Solomon's HomeGuard in the mid 90's. Updates were sent quarterly on floppies.

 

I used to love ThunderBYTE. Really fast scanning compared to other antiviruses I had used at the time e.g. Mcafee, and the heuristic cleaning of viruses was a really nice feature, although at least one was was able to exploit it, so that a system became infected when heuristic cleaning was done. Also, NOD ICE - the DOS predecessor of NOD32 had heuristic cleaning, but this was never included in NOD32.

Mcafee suite, on Win98 SE. The box had a 500 mhz CPU and like 32 MB of RAM. And I think running a real-time AV is resource consuming now... sheesh, those were the days.

 

A little off-topic but what was the first AV with realtime protection?

 

Me too, 1995, Thunderbyte antivirus (from Nederland I think) for Win 3.11. It caught many virus that my wife brought on a floppy (5 1/4) from Philippines. I remember one: Stoned

 

Oddly enough, it's my current Antivirus: AVG.

However, the first Anti-virus I paid for was PC-cillin 2003. Wasn't bad for the time compared to the "greats" Norton and McAfee.

 

AVG on 98SE ! I thought it was amazing at the time, for FREE
