Your first Anti-Virus

in what year did you purchase avira ?

 

My first was McAfee in the late 90's. I got it for free from the university I worked at. I remember being dialed in to AOL and doing an update maybe once a week. McAfee would show a little car sitting at a gas pump filling up when it was updating. It seemed to take forever and my wife would inevitably end up telling me to hurry up because she needed to use the phone.

I also remember using AVG around that same time. I think it had the exact same symbol or tray icon that it has now. I also used Kaspersky pretty early on. I loved the squealing pig noise when it found an infection!

 

Avira - way back in the day,when they were using Luke Filewalker.

 

The first antivirus I used was Mcafee, back in 1990, however this was not on my own computer. I really have no idea what the first antivirus I used on my own PCs was, as I've used so many different antiviruses - pretty much every antivirus ever written for DOS, and almost as many different Windows AVs.

However on my first new PC, I ran PC-cillin 98. This is actually one of the best antiviruses I've ever used - really light on resources and also really stable. The stability aspect was a critical one when running Windows 98, as the OS did not have memory protection, meaning that a badly written app cause system instability and make other programs crash. Thankfully Windows 2000, XP and every MS os released after this have had memory protection (and also unlimited resources too which is another big plus).

Avira is still using Luke Filewalker when scanning...

My first AV was Panda which came installed with my new computer back in the day. My first purchased AV was Norton IS 2004 which I had to eventually uninstall as it was basically slowing my machine to a crawl.

 

Our first PC was purchased 1997/98

It came without an AV, and the first AV I installed was Panda Platinum Antivirus. And I think it was one of the more resource friendly at the time.

I believe mine was DrWEB version 2, I ran with the good doctor for 2-3 years.

 

Norton, what else ? I bought my first pc in 1999, and I was a very common user .

 

LOL, Thats was not to far back in the day,As they where using that in 07 and later IF memory serves.

 

I remember my first antivirus being Kaspersky Antivirus v6 (back 2005 or something).
My aunt's first AV was avast! with that CD player looking scan UI

I used Eset Nod 32 as the first one very light and efficient then.

 

CPAV for DOS (PC-Tools)

 

I first used Norton around 1998 possibly earlier. I think it caused more errors and blue screen of death having it installed than not.

 

NOD32, before it got cosmetic and fat...

1996. Norton AntiVirus v2 for Windows 95. Used Norton exclusively until 2003.

 

I think that it was Norton, but I do not remember for sure.

 

The free one that came with Windows 3.1.
