I like this from West Coast Labs- We also looked at other aspects of the new Security Essentials offering. The latest version of the software monitors the Windows firewall, and when we installed it on our test system it applied settings that prevented our attacking PC from connecting or extracting any information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have MSE and use the WIN 7 firewall with 'Tiny Wall' . This Tiny Wall makes the WIN 7 firewall pass the GRC Leak Test with out Pop-Ups asking or telling you anything...just Quietness Plus, scores higher using the COMODO Firewall Tester beating the Comodo firewall at it's on game! http://tinywall.pados.hu/ http://www.davescomputertips.com/2012/06/tinywall-the-best-thing-since-sliced-bread/
I'm noticing the MSE process takes up a lot of cpu in Win 8 when doing things like large file copies, extraction etc. I don't think there was this high usage in earlier versions or in Win 7, but I'm not sure. Anyone else running Win 8 (I have Release Preview on laptop, RTM from MSDN on pc) have this issue?
Hi Microsoft Security Essentials 4.1.509.0 Prerelease http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29942
It has always only updated roughly once a day (MSE 1-4) if you don't make your own task schedule. When i have used it i have always made two schedules. One checking at startup and another checking for new sigs every 30 minutes. You get up to 3 a day that way, it has never been fast regarding how many times it updates.
To those members who have tweaked MSE to check for updates every 2 hours, have you noticed the daily increase of definition updates lately? I'm averaging 5 new updates a day, doing them manually:
So why would a software company think that malware signatures are so important that they would spend time and resources to update them multiple times per day, but yet they design their one and only flagship antivirus, to only check for updates once per day?
gerardwill, thanks for the confirmation! As far as I know, this ramped-up update frequency is very recent. Perhaps a future MSE version could incorporate the option of checking definition updates more frequently. Time will tell.
According to MMPC definintion change log there are still only three daily updates listed. The actual daily frequency seems to be an unknown. Ever since Aug. 21 definition versions displayed in the MSE interface had not matched or always been listed at the MMPC site. For example my latest definitions are 1.135.515.0 (not listed) while at the time of posting MMPC lists the most recent as 1.135.506.0. This issue has been reported in both MSE Answers forum and MSE PR forum and supposedly proper authorities are aware. MMPC - Definition Change Log http://www.microsoft.com/security/p...rsion=1.135.506.0&Release=Released&Package=AM Virus definitions don't match changelog http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...g/1f78095e-5bc7-47a5-8d7d-c05e44dc8919?auth=1
Perhaps the posting time was off, I checked MMPC after posting and version 1.135.530.0 was available. Perhaps if I had done a manual update I may have obtained 1.135.542.0.
