For my desktop I see no advantage. If my laptop had a touchscreen, then I might consider it.

If anyone is considering WIN8, don't get it as soon as it's available. Microsoft typically uses its customers to find the bugs, and then it gradually makes updates. Wait a year and then get it after it's had a service pack and a ton of improvements. For myself, I think WIN7 is the best OS they ever made, and WIN8 is a step back unless you use a touch screen. It's ugly too.

if you want to get in on the 40$ upgrade it has to be done before February 2013.
if i am gonna get Win 8 i am sure gonna take advantage of that rebate price.

maybe i'm mistaken, but judging from the tone of your post it would seem you haven't even tried it yet.
it works pretty good as it is right now.

Me too - unless there's some hot-shot new functionality that I'm unaware of right now, having only briefly tinkered with it in a VM.

I have had a change of mind. I tested Windows 8 beta and puked over the pad-interface. I have now installed a evaluation and have noticed that I dont have to see or use it. There are now an app (start8 ) from the makers of windowblinds where you can set windows to always boot to to the desktop. Suddenly Windows 8 becomes bearable :) I think I will upgrade it coz I still use windows for gaming (well, and revisiting the beta testing of security apps lately. I kind of missed that in Linux :) ) and it is always good to have the latest. And I hear that initially it will be very cheap to upgrade.

I'll probably do it out of curiosity. Although I don't like the aesthetics of the Metro design at all, I think with some customization I could get used to it. I'm very curious about what they were thinking with it. I'm curious to see where it will go with app development. Will desktop PC users find the kinds of apps the tablets get useful, or will Metro remain a "start screen" on our computers? Is Metro really a vital part of a desktop OS, or just an interactive advertisement for their tablets? Is this new interface the future of Windows, or a flop that will be phased out in Windows 9? I just can't resist seeing for myself.

just an interactive advert for their tablets, imo.
personally, i saw no use whatsoever for the Metro Apps on a PC desktop.
i uninstalled all of them while i was trying it.

Windows 8 is slightly faster than Win 7, which is good.
not a whole lot but a speed increase is always welcome.
i liked the new Task Manager.

coming from XP, W7 seemed like a giant step forward for me.
almost as big as going from 95/98 to XP.

but Metro aside, there isn't much on the surface to distinguish it from W7.

Why upgrade to Win 8 ... I can live with the annoying UAC on Vista, and I've got a Win 7 that doesn't require me to disable metro upon installation. Not impressed at all with metro.

I've never purchased Windows, I've always managed to get it for free through school or work. I'll do the same if I think it's worth it for gaming - otherwise I'm on Linux.

I probably won't use Windows 8 and will skip it (like I did Vista).I'm trying out RTM right now and don't really like it. It looks like MS doesn't really know what they want. Maybe they will make better one with their next release.

Without start button MS is not getting my money, even if its only $14.99. I will wait till windows 9 or 10 if I have to.

No. Win 7 is perfectly fine for me, and then it seems I may be sticking with Linux for the foreseeable future.
