Meanwhile I've discovered other strange phenomenons. Seriously speaking, security softwares aren't simple programs with crude operating logic, but rather they have a complex behavior, they are "personalities" with unpredictable, capricious twists, like a son of man

 

Not only are they not better, they're worse in many cases. Just look at the thread about the conflicts between Avast/Avira's Web Shields/Guards vs. Windows7/Comodo FW's... perfect example of what "features" can do to you, especially ones that overlap. Many people are simply creating more attack surface and potential for conflict with these pimped out AV's.

They'd be better off using a simple, on access only scanning regimen (File Shield/Guard only). It'll shoot down anything they come across. The rest is bells, whistles, & conflict... not to mention a drag on your HD. Plus you don't have to pay money. The best AV's are truly free, even integrated these days (MSE). or... none at all.

I don't like seeing all the reports of conflicts, but if it's waking more people up to this fact, it's not a complete loss.

 

Thank you lucid, so very well stated and I agree 100%. I shudder at some of the configs i see on here, although I am glad they are working for folks, I just think it is asking for potential problems. I could be wrong in many cases, but I have seen so much over the years, and conflicts can cause extremely unpredictable behavior that often is difficult to pinpoint.

It can all be a drag on systems. I like simplicity that is effective. Comodo actually offers this in a free suite, that can also be tamed down if one wants and knows they have a clean system, etc. I just installed it today on my wifes tower. She was using another free AV until lately it began behaving oddly. So today I cleaned it out, also removed the firewall I had installed years ago, and after a few hours of cleaning and registry hunting, I then imaged the cleaned up partition. I then decided upon CIS because it was all in one, and very adjustable so it would not bother her as she worked.

She is very productive on her tower, but really does not know how to answer all the security alarms and alerts, etc. I figured CIS would fit the bill, and so far, it has very well. She is using XP Pro SP2, and CIS really operates well on her machine, and I have it setup for solid protection, yet keeping it as quiet as possible. I am impressed with the operation of it, I like it even better on her XP Pro than on my Win7 laptop. I have the AV set to On Access, and the firewall set to Safe mode along with D+ on Safe mode, along with making a few custom rules for some of the applications she uses so she can run them without having to answer a series of redundant questions.

I will say this, in my opinion, if CIS is not enough for most users, then nothing is. CIS installed on her machine is under 200MB. Performance is solid, and I think as good if not better protection than the 800MB + monsters that try and make people feel 'safer' which is simply not true.

An update regarding my wifes tower and CIS: I keep her system quite clean and well managed. She began to have trouble with freezing at boot up, system freeze at the XP welcome screen. This has been an issue in the past, and I was surprised it is still happening even after it was said to be fixed. I checked settings, etc., D+ setting, Computer security policy but did not see anything odd or being blocked. So instead of spending hours trying to figure it out, I reimaged back to a clean state and now I have her running just with Private Firewall until I decide what I will try next.

A shame CIS did not work for her, but from what I found online, this appears to be a recurring event for some, with no easy solutions, on both XP and some Win7 machines oddly enough. Some have found D+ blocking some necessary applications and/or setting them as 'Isolated application', but I did not see anything obvious, so I will keep looking at other solutions. I hope version 6 of CIS has addressed these oddities as I am looking forward to trying that at some point.

For now, no boot problems, so it definitely was CIS, but I simply did not take the time to dig too deep, deciding to simply go back to a clean state for now, along with a good firewall. She is running good so far

 

Normally, on a clean machine, it should not be a struggle to install and run CIS. Of course, there may be FP and you have the faculty to put yourself files you are sure and know good as trusted so it won't be sandboxed. Also try to put the sandbox to partially limited just in case it sandboxes important system files as untrusted will completely block the sandboxed file. On Win7, CIS works like a charm! And, it's free...!!!
