I just installed Panda cloud at my PC and got a question.
Should i enable the 'Url monitor' for extra security? Is this recommended? Does it effect cpu resources?

CPU, no, it might add a tiny delay to the webpage loading but i don't think you'll notice it...

 

Enabling the URL monitor will install the Firewall drivers so that it can record all HTTP activity on a per-process basis. It's definitely interesting to see what communication each of your running processes does. It might help in tracking an infection by an unknown or undetected malware. But then again, not everybody will be interested in this level of detail.

 

Even on the Free Edition? Does it filter in any way the connection? I just wanted to keep Windows FW alone... that's why I had to give up on the PRO Edition...

 

Yes even on the Free Edition.

Enabling it will not filter any connections nor interfere with your Windows Firewall. It will only, as it name implies, monitor which URLs each process connects to and give you a history of it. Try it out, its a very interesting feature which I have not seen in other products yet.

 

pbust, does URL blocking work without the toolbars? In 1.x you had to use the plugin that came with the toolbars but you could later remove the toolbars to keep URL blocking. Is this still the case with 2.x ?

Yes, with 2.x you can still uninstall the Toolbar and keep the URL Filtering component cleanly without any browser-addon.

You have to install the toolbar during install.

If you didn't, you can always install it afterwards from:

Why isn't URL blocking separated in the first place? Most of ppl don't know that by not installing the toolbar (which lets face it everyone hates) they are in fact missing out a quite big chunk of protection...

What i'm saying is that "Panda Security URL Filtering" should be installed regardless if you install toolbar or not.

I remind the same "suggestion" being voted on that site since version 1.5... How many votes does it take to make it happen? Cause, in all honesty, if it's not going to happen, wouldn't it be better just to say "No, stop asking".
I don't like toolbars, hence I don't have Panda's URL Filtering, even if I can uninstall it later on it doesn't seem right to me. The fact that it keeps working even after uninstalling the toolbar makes it look more like a glitch than a workaround...

I just found out a better way of installing Panda URL Filtering.

Download Panda Security Toolbar:
http://www.cloudantivirus.com/toolbar/PandaSecurityToolbar.exe

Open the PandaSecurityToolbar.exe using WinRAR or 7zip.

Open folder $TEMP and extract the file PandaURLFiltering_XXX.exe (XXX are just some version numbers).

When extracted, just run this EXE and voila, Panda URL Filtering installed without any of the toolbar junk installed along.

I think this might even work if you're not even using Panda Cloud... but i haven't tested to be sure...

The URL filter doesn't work for me using SRWare Iron, but it does for IE9 on the same machine.

 

The URL filter doesn't work for me using Opera.

Maybe it's OA blocking?
