I have this software, purchased in 2008/2009...but I don't use it since the developer mysteriously went missing, and now after all this time has suddenly returned.

Just doesn't ring true, somehow. Can someone tell if he still a registered member at Wilders? ...because I can't find 'Tony', here.

I've had the same thoughts/doubts as everyone else but I do know that Tony has communicated in the past in language that I thought at the time wasn't from a Google Translation (nb but not consistantly).
The situation is quite frustrating at the moment because (obviously) I would like to ask a million questions but manners and protocol forbid it. Having said that, the communication level at this time is consistant with the "Tony" that I was in contact with before he went missing. Tony never posted a lot (even before he went missing) and I felt at the time that he might have had a friend who was more conversant with the use of English to help him occasionally
I've come to feel that it is the real Tony that I'm emailing (more by gut feeling than hard evidence) at the moment and as I've said in earlier posts, even if we have some misgivings, "The proof of the pudding, is in the eating". We get the opportunity now, to make up our minds, because there is someone currently active and we can gauge the quality of the support and when the new version is released (which will have fundamental differences to older versions) it would be highly unlikely that anyone other than the original "Tony" could make that happen. I intend to contact Tony regularly and as matters progress maybe things will become clearer.

    Patrick

I say "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" ...the way I see it, the most important issue here is one of continuing SD development and support. I (for one) am grateful that now appears to be in place for my most valuable security app! :isay:

    @Patrick:
I really hope your gut feeling is right and yes atm only a new version could eventually show whats going on. Until then people can ask for support but I wouldn't suggest to buy the old SD.
All the explanations from your email excerpts are contradictorily - at least for me - so we must stay sceptical.

    Main points:
    (1) He claims that he coulnd't be online for a long time. In next mail he claimed that he startet the shadowdefender blog...(How if he wasn't online?)
    (2) program, his posts in SD Forum, ShadowDefender Blog...there always was a very good english - better than Google Translate. If there was a helper - where is he now?

Anyone has some links to chinese forums, where the same discussion is going on? Maybe someone can ask "tony"...

I don't want people who are thinking of purchasing Shadow Defender to look to me as to whether they should do this, that or the other, I made myself fairly clear in post 1260

Let's just see how things go.

    Hi sdmod

Is there any reason that you know of why Tony cannot login to his account here? [or ask him why not? please] #1287

    Hi Tarnak
He still has an account here, but it has not had activity [been used] since 2009.

Tony was not his user name.

Good question. I am very suspicious about all of this. Maybe it is really him. I hope so. But what has happened>? Has he been in trouble with his government? Will his newer versions have some hidden code designed to assist them in some way? I can't help but wonder.

That being said, I think it is a fantastic product.

Yes, even if Tony chooses to post on here, it's entirely up to him and nothing to do with anyone else, just like any other member.
I asked him to make a statement on Wilders...and he gave his answer, which I've posted.
The answer was, that he struggles with Engish, needs Google Translate and prefers email contact (which he can take the time to digest) (nb Even on his own Shadow Defender forum he didn't post often).

I surely hope this is a real Tony, however some things make me sceptical as well. I remember the Shadow Defender blog site, and also the fact that there was only one SD trial available there (named simply as setup.exe) with no differentiation betwen x32 and x64 versions. What was that all about? If it is the real Tony that released v331, why doesn't he come clean at least NOW with a changelog?

This whole Tony thing is fast turning into a soap opera, a farse, a bad joke. I have dealt with Chinese companies in the past and their mindset can be unnecessarily complicated. As I said before on another post: transparency of operation is not always important to them, and they would rather keep silent than admit that they don't know something. Losing face is one of the worst things for them, especially when they're dealing with the west. The complicated Chinese mindset may be a contributing factor behind this situation.

Patrick, thank you so much for your continuing efforts to shed light into this matter. :thumb:

Tony, if you're reading this and if you are the true Tony, please log in here and TALK TO US. Bad english or not, IT DOESN'T MATTER. Come here and talk to your customers, to the people who have wholeheartedly supported your work and kept the legacy of your program alive for more than two years now despite your absence. You owe at least this much to us.

(same thing in Chinese - using Google translation, so god help us...) :D

I've just looked at your Chinese text and it doesn't translate too bad ;)

I have emailed (and received replies from) Tony about six or seven times this week, I've covered in depth the areas that are mentioned on all the posts on the forum but maybe it loses a lot in translation.
I believe Tony has answered those questions that he was able to answer.
I really can understand members/users misgivings particularly with the length of absense and Tony's lack of contact and support but I don't want this to turn into a witchhunt. Tony was always a quiet, polite, unassuming person and we don't know what personal reasons may have created this situation and "probing" is not what I want to do. We have been promised a new version of Shadow Defender that will be useable with Windows 8 and Solid State Drives and we have some support contact now.
I can't re-ask the questions that I have already asked, it would seem like harrassment to me.
If the new version "happens" and the support continues on an everyday practical level, then we have made some steps forward. I know that it's frustrating but we will know one way or the other if we give it time.

    ps
As I remember Tony would sometimes release stuff as one setup file for 32 bit and 64bit and sometimes each seperately (tzuk did the same with Sandboxie I think).

I Agree and we should wait now and lets see what happens. In the meantime, we should turn the thread back over to The Unofficial Shadow Defender support thread as Cutting Edgetech Intended.

I hope it's not a 'ploy' by the current owners of SD, in order to give legitimacy to their operation. I trust Patrick's judgement since he is the one of the few people who dealt with Tony directly in the past. The future will show...

Personally im living in Vietnam (close to chinese mindset), some developers here don't speak/write english very well, and the company often employ some translators to answer mails or run the website.

So you can't really guess if the tony that answered you before is the one that replied lately based only on how he write.

the only proofs is to ask him about something only him must knows. (if Patrick has some private and personnal discussion with him about his family, vacation trip, hobbies, etc...)
