I am about to format my system and was wondering, what do I lose if I install NOD32 v2 as opposed to the newer versions?

what has improved from v2 to v3? and from v3 to v4? or v4 to v5?

    That would help me decide

The reason I am asking is that NOD32 became more bloated in every version

If I run v4 for example, would I be getting all the regular updates and be safe or am i I missing on something huge?

    please advice

    thanks

I think v5 is really fast for you. You can use the new features, if you wish.

And what am I missing on if I used v4?

can someone tell me the differences?

are the virus signatures the same?

virus signatures for all supported eset versions are the same,so you would not miss out on virus protection part, but you would miss out on new features like HIPS.

Personally I still use version 4.2.

v2 is ancient and from my understanding is no longer developed/supported. v3 and 4 are old also, why would you want to run the older versions? Unless you are having some sort of compatibility issue?

Give v6 RC a whirl, its the main security solution on all of my systems and sails smoothly.

I've Got Outpost Firewall Pro which has hips of its own,so i would have more problems with ESET and its HIPS running together.

As i Said if you are just looking for detection capabilities then all supported versions of ESET receive the same signature updates,so detection on any particular version of ESET will not be different from the other.

For some of us, v5 came with a bug that causes the computer to freeze, after connecting an external harddrive. After almost one year, ESET is still blaming the problem on conflicts with other software, a problem that didn't exist with v4.

Personally, I'm moving to Kaspersky, as soon as my ESET subscription expires.

As I've already wasted the price of a subscription renewal for five computers, I think I've learned my lesson.

ESET released update 5.0.95 which fixed this issue for almost all users that were experiencing this problem. If you have version 5.2.9 installed and are STILL experiencing this issue, we'd be VERY interested in gathering more information (SysInspector Log at least) to help us fix any remaining issues that might still exist.

In response to the OP's question, yes all versions previous to version 3.0 are no longer supported and we're no longer pushing virus signature database updates to these versions.
As for the rest, every version has included improvements in protection. I'm not sure why someone would feel comfortable using outdated versions of any security product.

What version was Antistealth technology added? Wouldn't he be gaining that by upgrading?

If you are experiencing this issue with the latest version of Eset then please send a bug report. You could help improve NOD 32 for us all. Send Sysinspector logs, and what other info they request. I have the latest version, and I use a ton of external drives on many different machines. I'm not experiencing this problem.

I'm using Windows XP, along with Malwarebytes and PerfectDisk, and won't be uninstalling either of them, as they're both good programs and didn't conflict with v4. The folks at Raxco have been particularly helpful in trying to resolve the problem... Unfortunately, to no avail.

I've sent SysInspector logs to ESET, but have never received a response.

Sorry, but I just don't have enough time to continue to help ESET with a bug they introduced, while basically getting a response of, "It's not us, it's the other guy."

Again, as it's been almost one year since v5's introduction, I'm done.

I honestly could not even find a changelog or a download for v2. Support expired on the build in November of 2010, if memory serves.

Many currently run version 5, some, including myself opt for a slightly older but more mature version 4.

Unfortunately, they didn't contact us. The same problem affects Malwarebytes; however, they were willing to fix it so I provided them with technical details as well as a listing of a memory dump to show where the problem is.

If I am not mistaken, the signature updates for all eset products that are still supported would still be the same,so in theory they would offer same core antivirus protection right ? ... unless i am missing something here.

so i use version 4.2 because i only want avtivirus protection from eset, which i believe to be the best.

To be honest i have never installed version 5 as soon as i heard that it had HIPS in it,because i knew it might conflict with other security products, especially the ones i use as per my signature,so i would be happy to keep on using version 4.2 till its support ends, which i hope would not be anytime soon !

Like ltg, I also use WinXPsp3, and PerfectDisk (v7.0)

So I would appreciate someone providing a clear description of what the conflict between NOD32 v5.x and PerfectDisk is. What bad things happen? And when do they happen?

And ltg also notes problems when using an external drive --- which I do, using a USB 2.0 connection, when I make image backups of my C: and D: partitions.

I am currently running NOD32 4.2.71.2 with no problems, so I probably should stick with it. But I'm aware that I may be missing something useful. (Family protection is not one of them for my two-adults conservative household.)

Also, to consider moving to NOD32 5.x, I need to know what HIPS are, and what the other additional 5.x features are (in words, not acronyms).

And have there been any problems with ESET's firewall? My former firewall was Danware's NetOP, but it's no longer available, and I unfortunately deleted it when upgrading from Win2ksp4 to WinXPsp3. The WinXP firewall has only an inbound protection, no outbound, and I need to replace that.

Until I get that sort of information, or a location for it, I'll stick with NOD32 4.2.71.2

Ronjor (this thread's #6) made a nice try to supply that information, but I need something more elementary.

I replied you that the problem is in PDFsFilter.sys and it's Raxco who must fix the bug in their code which manifests in conjunction with v5 on Windows XP. Raxco has not contacted us regarding the issue but I can try filling in their support form and provide details from a memory dump showing the issue on their part if they will be willing to tackle it.

Edit: I'm sorry for editing your post, I meant to reply in a separate post and edited yours in error. At any rate, I will try to get in touch witch Raxco in the hope they will be willing to fix the issue in their driver.

Raxco support has confirmed they are going to release an updated filter driver addressing the issue soon. If you need the new driver urgently, they suggested emailing their support.

I still don't know the circumstances that cause a computer with NOD32 5.x installed to freeze during a USB (2.0? 3.0?) connection to an external hard disk. Does the freeze always occur, or only randomly? How is a freeze ended --- unplug the connection and/or reboot, or is the freeze permanent until an outside firm is hired to solve the problem?

And I still don't know what bad thing or things happen between NOD32 5.x and Raxco's Perfect Disk.

But in any case, am I right to think that before I upgrade to NOD32 5.x, since I am now using Raxco's PerfectDisk 7.0, I must first install the latest version of Raxco's Perfect Disk (after they have added the filter)? Or is my PerfectDisk 7.0 immune from its problem (whatever that problem may be) with NOD32 5.x?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

I don't recall seeing any report of the issue on other than Windows XP OS.

I'm not sure as I haven't replicated it myself but I assume it occurs always after connecting a USB disk regardless of whether it's USB 2.0 or 3.0 as the issue lies in Mount Manager. Once a computer locks up, it is necessary to restart it.

I have no clue what versions of PerfectDisk are affected. I'd suggest you try it yourself and if you experience the issue, contact Raxco for the updated driver.
