Should I be using WEP?

    No, I don't think that is it. I think device makers assume if you are buying a wireless device you intend to use wireless. So it makes sense for it to be enabled by default.

    I haven't done a firmware update, and is that what you're referring to?

    I'm referring to an open-source replacement for the manufacturer's firmware. Some companies such as Buffalo have adopted it as the factory firmware.

    That can be good or bad. It is often seen as a move to shed responsibility for it - someone else to point a finger at - which often leaves the user with no one to turn to.

    If all the companies adapt the same firmware, there is little incentive to shy away from the no-name, generics. And that's fine if the products are secure, support your needs, and don't break on Day 91 of the 90-day warranty.
