So, I decided to visit their website, after a long time. Nothing new, at all. Nor can I see anything about a new version being worked at their forum. At their website -http://www.peerblock.com they do mention: I haven't seen such version 1.2 yet? This was near 1 year ago. The article at their website was written on 02-Oct-11 Sadly, no other developers seem to be interested in taking it and rework it.
It looks like something I'd like to try.. not used it before.. this is the first time I've actually given it a look see.. http://www.peerblock.com/userguide/how_to_use Sort of on the order of a sophisticated host file.. user friendly sounds better..

Oops' i may have made a mistake.. in all the excitement i forgot that I'm running Hostsman.. do you think it will be O.k. I'm thinking that might be overkill.. Tia.. Hogndog *edit* after further review this just might work.. Hostsman manages our already existent host files.. with an application like this riding along side it may be a boon..
There are at least 2 major issues with it, IMHO. 1) No IPv6 support; not worried that much as my device only supports IPv4. 2) The GUI runs with HIGH privileges - this means that, if you're running as a standard user/protected admin (Vista/7), then PeerBlock.exe will be sharing the same desktop environment with the limited user and with the administrator - this should not happen. Processes running under the context of a limited user, should run with the same privileges that the user has, not higher. There's a workaround, and that would be to schedule a task and run it under the administrator account, but you'd no longer see the GUI from your account, and wouldn't know what is being blocked, and if some connection needs to be allowed... unless you don't mind switching accounts back and forward. That said, is anyone familiar with GOOD block lists, that are not in PeerBlock's format? Let's exclude Dshield and Abuse.ch... I know about them.
An overkill? Not necessarily. One blocks domains, the other blocks IPs. If you know which lists to use (not necessarily anti-P2P).
I too never saw the point of things like peer block. I have TPLs for blocking general nonsense and SmartSceen for blocking malicious sites and unknown files. The only benefit I ever saw of having a blocklist of peers was for torrenting. I use a torrent client that can download peer block lists like a TPL subscription and it will deny connections to them, no need to have anything system wide.
I just emailed the developer maybe he can shed some light on whether or not they plan on doing anything further with the project..
Few months back I was using it also until I found up it stoped blocking anything after each reboot. Sometimes it helped when I updated or removed/added list and regenerated list cache, but after a while even that didn't help. This problem is filed under "known issues" but there seems to be no final solution for it yet.
version 1.1 still works fine... but its sad this software took the same path as peerguardian, I think its very suspect, giving the hurtful nature of this software to some 'people'.
Thanks, does it come with in built lists or do you need to download them? Where do you download them? On topic PeerBlock is a nice application. I use it from time to time. Wish they would update it though.
