On the DiamondCS website, the description for TDS-3 says TDS "essentially detects anything malicious that isn't a virus," then goes on to list several worms among other items.

The implication here is that if you have TDS-3, then you don't need the DCS WormGuard product. Can someone confirm this or clarify for me?

    Thanks & regards,
    Stro

Edit: I scrolled down the page and saw a thread asking this same question was started on June 27. I would like to know from one of the DCS contributors, however, why their website narrative makes claims for TDS (see my first paragraph), yet they advote using both TDS-3 and WormGuard in this forum. It's somewhat confusing. Maybe the website wording should be changed?

You need both for better security. Add Process Guard for even better security. There is still a better way to get security but I wouldn't recommend disconnecting from the Internet :)

Add Port Explorer to those and you see almost realtime suspicious <possible trojan> connections too and lots more.

    Stro,
Just my opinion and others in this forum are likely to jump in and disagree with me, so take it for what it's worth. Here is the order in which I prioritize my security softwares:

    1) Firewall - I use Zone Alarm Security Suite (there is a free version though)
    2) Anti-Virus - I use Norton AV Pro
    3) TDS-3
    4) Process Guard
    5) Ad-Aware Pro(by Lavasoft and there is also a free version available)
    6) Port Explorer
    7) Worm Guard
8] All others (Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, etc.)

You may have people jumping in arguing with my both the order of my list and the choices (i.e. choosing Norton/Zone Alarm vs. other options). The bottom line is that however you choose to order your list, you should buy the programs you feel are the best at doing what they are supposed to do, so I won't argue for the specific programs that I chose. So, why did I choose the order I chose?

A Firewall can prevent many trojans from connecting to the Internet, but it does allow you to control everything that does connect to the Internet and I feel this is most important, although some trojan programs may be able to disable, or bypass a firewall.

A good virus scanner will detect some trojans and even spyware, but that's not what they're designed to do, so they only do a marginal job, at best. However, having a good defense against viri is important and it's better to have a marginal line of defense against trojans and spyware than none.

TDS-3 is the best anti-trojan software, bar none. Some may argue that PG should be here (or even higher) because it doesn't matter what your defense is if it has been rendered useless by malicious code. I agree with that argument; however, I chose this order under the assumption that the other two layers were in place. If all three of these layers are present, a system is pretty secure (in my opinion).

Process Guard is a very, very important layer. I don't want to downplay it's role in any way. I consider it to be one of my most important lines of defense; however, this ranking is geared towards the average PC user and I feel that they should layer their defense accordingly.

Ad-aware is free (although I have the Pro version and that costs) and it catches a lot of bad things. Get it!!!

Port Explorer is very helpful at seeing what's already on your system and making connections.

Worm Guard does prevent worms from infecting your system in the first place, which means that it's very useful as a preventative layer. The reason for this ranking is because the other layers will find the worm and PG will prevent the worm from disabling the other layers. I still own it and feel safer with it in place.

Arm your system according to what YOU feel best suits your needs. I just hope this has helped in any way.

No knocks from me Dallen ;)

I agree with you on 98% as just a couple of things vary for me only program wise....

    1] FW: Kerio 2.1.5
    2] AV: KAV 4.5 PRO
    3] AT: TDS3
    4] AW: WormGuard
    5] ProcessGuard
    6] Port Explorer
7] AdAware; Spybot; ALL javacool's security tools: SWB, SG, MRU Blaster

I also agree Firewall is No. 1

PLUS MAKE SURE YOU ARE UP TO DATE WITH MS PATCHES.

My SIG has full inventory:

I also would agree wholeheartly. I have a couple of differences like F-Prot for Virus, but it is the concept that counts.

Only additions I can think of is I have run the following

Dcombob and Unpnp which are from Gibson's Grc site and
Htastop and dsostop2 which are from the Boclean site.

Caveat: if you use Htastop your user account function in the control panel won't work. If you need it you have to turn off the htastop.

Finally since I am sort of bound to IE as a browser I also use PopUpCop which besides popups keeps watch on Active X and script stuff in the browser, and also BHODemon watches for Brower Help Objects which can also be nasty.

And after all this I actually use the computer to get work done. :D

    TAS,
What do you mean by this? Regarding the Microsoft patchs, I would place that as more important than a firewall due to the seriousness of the consequences of not updating. All other security measures will protect you from things that may not happen, but without updating I can almost promise you will be infected. Another important layer is common sense. You can have the best protection known to mankind, but if you don't exercise good judgement, nothing can save you.

    Peter2150,
Why in the world would anyone want to do that?

    "Paul" will do ;)

Don't get me wrong; by no means I'm questioning your good intentions - on the contrary: I do applaud them ;). No need for apologies.

WormGuard is for keeping an eye on scripts, malicious code when you try to open a file, beside TDS which blocks executables with Exec Protection. I see them as an important addition to each other, not much overlap, maybe the confusion came with the info TDS uses little parts of the WormGuard technology, but not the whole of WormGuard. WormGuard surely did save my computer's life several times!
And i like the option to look in files in the safe mode to know what's really going on!

The borders between all kinds of malware are geting vaguer by the day, worms, trojans, viruses, polymorph viruses seem different from polymorph trojans, keyloggers, trojan downloaders, JS downloaders , trojan spyware, adware, dialers, rootkits, spybots, did i forget any?
I can only say make sure you have the whole lot from the DiamondCS site and you can hardly go wrong, only if you forget your firewall.

For the HTAstop: that functionallity is in WormGuard, blocking it from websites too it was; my system was most unhappy with the DSOstop/2 and i had to make sure it was really unactivated to make my system functioning again.
Maybe because i installed some extra security from the DiamondCS site or just because my system does behave different, dunno, only know i try to keep it as much as possible with what i have and am comfortable with and what i can support to others :)
