+:thumb: RS running smooth here and playing nice with MBAM Pro.

First /initial dB update really slow to complete. Huge dB not compromise with my dL speed.
    anyway,GUI looks nice.

I recommend going to the Security Policy settings under Configuration and enabling everything:
    Roboscan Configuration.png

When Windows security update is checked, Roboscan checks for Windows updates:
    Roboscan Main.png

Clicking on Resolve downloads and installs the updates:

As you can see from the following picture some updates were missed by Roboscan. It just checks for Windows updates, not updates for other software picked up by Windows Update:

Yesterday I installed the free version successfully on my win8 CP machine.
I had to download it with download manager, but I couldn't avoid the very long waiting for the first update to complete.
Anyway, it feels very light, maybe lighter than the included mse/windows defender.
Detection is not great, but it's decent, especially for a free av.

Pretty good solution, as is avast and avira.

I find it strange that users are reporting poor detection rates but on the other hand it scored highy in the latest Virus Bulletin rap tests.

I have not tested it's detection rates becuase I have no samples to test is against, and in general find it extremely difficult to get infected, no matter where I go on the internet.

I agree. I'll trust professional organizations like Virus Bulletin where it does well, and since it uses BitDefender's engine, it should perform at least almost as well as BitDefender, which always does well on independent tests.

I agree that it's odd. My only guess is either that:

    1/ Roboscanner is poorer at 'fresh' samples than others;
2/ There is some kind of sample bias with how VB find malware that means Roboscanner will do well.

Where companies get samples from for testing and how they know they're malicious can potentially change the whole shape of the tests.

In any case, I've had extremely poor results from Roboscanner and SuperAntispyware when it comes to 'fresh' samples from http://malwaretips.com/index.php (Malware Hub subforum). I would do some followup scans with Roboscanner, but the UI crashes annoyed me - doubt they affected the scan results though as the core program was fine.

Noticed some interesting trends: Panda/MBAM/Kingsoft/EMSIsoft Emergency Kit all had high detections from the earliest scans that I did, and didn't change much in when repeated 24 hours later. Dr Web and McAfee Stinger were decent, but took 24 hours to catch up with the latter AVs/AMs.

Roboscan site mentions proactive protection. What is the proactive protection in RS?

Means it analyzes suspicious files in an internal sandbox, using behavioral heuristics to determine whether it is malware or not. This is also BitDefender's technology.

Unfortunately, for some people "zero day" protection doesn't exist in a program unless it has the extra eye candy. :D

Interesting indeed, thanks for the share :thumb:

I begin to wonder if the poor detection in some recent individual tests was caused by Roboscan's "safe list". Maybe what it missed were false positives after all.

does roboscan free use the most up to date scan engine of BD?

its lite and seems to work well. but how come the firewall is disabled by default? not really sure why.

I think it does - I'm sure there have been posts about that already in this thread. I'm not sure why the firewall isn't enabled by default - however not a big deal, it just takes a single click to enable it from the main screen.

roboscan firewall is pretty simple & if you are behind a router with inbuilt NAT/SPI firewall enabled then even windows7 firewall is more than good enough compared to roboscan one.in any case if one still need a good firewall then there are lots of better & free options available.probably why it is off by default since unlike some other suites(kaspersky) firewall is not roboscan strong point.

Exactly the conclusion I drew on installing.
I already have Comodo/D+ plus installed so to be honest it did me a favour.

So I was checking to see if you could disable the firewall of ZoneAlarm's free antivirus and firewall and run a third-party firewall alongside it, and that you can't since the drivers for the firewall are still loaded.

I was wondering if the same is true for Roboscan?

My first impressions, so far, not so good.

I had 5 trojans placed on my desktop. Roboscan missed all of them, whereas, Kingsoft did the complete opposite.

I did that purposely for testing it out against fresh samples.

Also, the spelling mistake on the main UI is annoying me like hell.

In the free version, the banner on the top right to upgrade has a spelling mistake.

Really? Annoyed by one little error? Woww. :D Its fine, we are only human. To be honest I never took much attention to the ads but I guess this is an example of how well the GUI was designed! :)
