Recommendations for standalone malware scanner?

What is the current recommendation for a standalone malware/trojan scanner please?

Ideally something that runs from USB or network folder and updates then scans.

It needs to be either free for commercial use, or licensed per site/technician so that it can be used on any PC that requires it.

DrWeb cureIt! (you have to download it everyday because it comes with the malware signatures) & Hitman Pro (scan is free, you gotta buy a license if you want to remove the threat).

I thought that you can activate a free trial license and remove the Malware found after activating the free trial license. I am not sure, but I think that the trial period is 30 days.

There are also bootable CD/ISO from major AV companies.
Emsisoft Emergency Kit, Hitman Pro both can be run from a USB, although Hitman Pro would require a connection to the internet.

 

I tried EEK 2.0 and I must say I really like it. The scan speed is much faster than it was in v.1. From now on it is a part of my security setup.

 

For commercial use, free: ESET Online Scanner, Panda Active Scan. Good scanners.

I tried EmsiSoft and DrWeb Cureit today.

Both seem decent, I think EmsiSoft may result in quite a few false positives as it was finding a lot of registry keys but no files or anything else associated with them and DrWeb gave a totally clean bill of health.

SuperAntiSpyware I'm assuming is geared a little more towards annoying stuff than "really bad stuff" compared to the other two?

That's a fair assessment of their products over the years.

 

I saw a lot of false positives a few years ago. However, in recent years I have seen almost none. I base this observation on my three Windows XP Pro 32 bit PC's which always have the web browsers 'sandboxed' when on the web. I periodically (at least once a month) scan each of my three PC's and find nothing (no false positives in the recent many months).

 

Same with me, lately I haven't seen any FP from EEK.

 

So far I've ran it on two machines and on both there were false positives (assuming a clean sweep on virustotal is "proof" enough).


Still, it seems the most complete and has the best pricing for the Help Desk scanner so that's what we're going with as the first option...
